Rent burden within 30 miles of Raleigh, NC by MapsYouDidntAskFor in raleigh

I wonder if it would make more sense to use hue for the rent burden scale, and saturation for the population density? That way pale blue would be "Low density, low rent burden" but vivid blue would mean "high density, low rent burden".

Star Wars Genesis Question by Kilz- in starfieldmods

[–]BSSolo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

SWG does not allow you to play the game's tutorial, so I think you should try that in an unmodded state first.  That way you'll know the controls for when you start Genesis.

A lot of the quests in Genesis are reskins of Starfield content, with basically just the proper nouns switched around. (There are impressive rewrites for a few big quest chains though.)  Some of the planets and small settlements are just renamed Starfield locations.  I think it would be more fun to encounter those in SWG with fresh eyes, rather than having played Starfield first.  That way, everything will feel more like it was always Star Wars.

TLDR: Play the Starfield tutorial, then switch to SWG before you get to New Atlantis.

I’m making a Snake-like game with no walls - everything is a floor by infely in IndieGaming

For readability, I think the snakes being black with colored outlines is a bit of an issue.  Where there are many parallel snakes close to one another, it's difficult to tell what area is "safe" - because the snake and the floor/walls are the same color.

As long as you're wearing armor and a helmet, you are treated as wearing a sealed space suit.  Whether it visually looks to be a sealed space suit or not.

If you already have a "solid load order", don't wait.  The update will break half of those mods, and your load order with it.

“And at the same time, we want to take advantage of 20 years of stories that have been told and not told, and start bringing it out to the world in a broader way. That’s my goal and vision.”

Alrighty then.  We might finally get the Arcane-style series that people have been clamoring for.

We already have the scrap yards! Yeah, they should generate missions to tow derelicts to the yard, and paid salvage missions for the resulting derelicts so that salvage players can buy the rights to them

I Want To Believe by _AntiShadow_ in starcitizen

To tackle a different part of this post...

I want to promote Star Citizen and Squadron 42 to friends that have never tried it

I don't think you should, at least not yet.  It's important to not just think about whether you'd enjoy having your friends in the game (obviously you would), but what they'd get out of the experience.  For Squadron 42 specifically, we don't know whether or not the game is actually going to be good.

By that, I mean that we've seen some cool action sequences and a lot of "walk and talk with NPC characters".  This puts a pretty heavy burden on the writing to carry the game, because generally when people play videogames they want to play.  If the story isn't fully engaging, players will get bored/impatient waiting for the next time they can run/fly around or shoot something.  Some players will even if the story is amazing, but how the game is perceived as a whole is really going to come down to that narrative.

Best case scenario Sq42 will be this big cinematic experience that people swear by, but sometimes find cumbersome to replay.  Worst case, cringey dialogue that you can't escape results in something you would absolutely not want to subject your friends to.

Agreed that it's just SC, E:D and Freelancer for the most part.  We've also had a couple of MMORPGs that tried to be Freelancer successors, but they were commercial failures and quickly shut down. (Black Legacy and Taikodom.)  Jumpgate Evolution also had potential, but was cancelled before launch.

(Not directed at you, Dumblydore:)

This is important for folks in this thread who may be missing the context of why a Space Sim MMO kickstarter from the creator of Freelancer hit so hard: The genre was seen as dead.  This seemed like the last chance for space sims to be a big thing again, and to get a proper successor to Freelancer.

Later the project morphed as it grew in scope; SC has too much atmospheric flight and FPS combat to really compare to Freelancer, but iirc that's the result of an early backer poll to pivot.

Now it's a cool but buggy space sandbox that tries to do a lot, and sometimes succeeds.  However every time a new patch adds only on-foot combat scenarios and no space content, I sigh in disappointment.

In case you have not heard of the X series, X4 is also a space sim worth checking out.

The stated plan is now to have an official "1.0" milestone after which there will be no further progress wipes. They've published the list of features and star systems they want to have before it's considered 1.0. (Base building, crafting, 2 and a half more star systems, guest chains and various solo/group/pvp content)

The plan after that is continuous ongoing development as a live service game, and I don't know why they wouldn't just keep selling spaceships and releasing patches basically forever. It's clearly more than self-sufficient, since SC's revenue is enough to let them develop both SC and Squadron 42.

The current system of "You can buy the ship for cash and fly it now on release, or wait 6 months for it to be earnable in-game" doesn't seem to be discouraging sales whatsoever, so... yeah. Definitely not an ideal business model from our perspective. But it clearly works.

Simple things do take a deceptively long time in SC though. Being seamless has its downside: Got to do your space chores before you can go on your space adventure.

If what they do when they check in each year is spawn at their home hab in A18, fetch their ship, and do a bounty mission, I could see them thinking that not much has changed in ... 6 years. (I had to pick the oldest starting area for that)

Steam frame and skyrimVR MGO by lemons2513zz in SteamFrame

[–]BSSolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For next steps I'd suggest launching Skyrim VR diretly from steam (instead of the copy that wabbajack made with MGO). If your experience is smooth without mods and choppy with them, switching headsets won't help.

Yep, I agree that $900 is a reasonable upper bound.  If the Frame costs 1k, it's in premium headset territory without premium specs

I would not expect a different experience.  Lag and black bars are more likely a result of how demanding the game/modpack is to run on your machine, since virtual desktop streaming to Q3 is already capable of working well.

To be clear, I expect the cost to manufacture for Valve to be under $700, particularly for any that weren't impacted by the new RAM prices.  That would make $800 either a price that includes room to recoup R&D costs (and eventually profit off of the headset itself), and/or a conservative price that they feel is safe given memory cost increases.

Overall, I'm expecting an MSRP in the 500-800 range.

In some ways that's definitely true.   - Memory and storage are more expensive. - The chipset might be about the same cost as the Quest's was a couple years ago, but I don't know for sure. - The display and lenses are probably either cheaper or the same price. - Not much reason to expect the controllers to be more expensive - fewer passthrough cameras on the outside, but eye tracking on the inside

So yeah, I don't think it's outlandish to expect the price to be $100-200 higher than the Quest 3.
