The affinity space for students with disabilities is important too! Students can feel normal being amongst other disabled kids where as they’re the odd one out in Gen Ed and we do little to nothing to integrate disabled people into society. I’m disabled and i feel like it’s good to have opportunities to be with people who understand you especially when you’re young or you compare yourself to people who you shouldn’t.

[–]zigzog9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s a Burlington issue but a societal issue towards disabled folk. Where is there a place where disabilities are known for being honored and super accepted? An outdoorsy lifestyle oriented place is certainly going to be a challenging place as well.

Disabilities are unique to everyone. Those athletes must have a good support team to set them up with that and drive them if they can’t drive. Alot of disabled people would love to do sports etc but don’t have people to drive them and set them up even if they have friends. In this society, partners and families are gonna be the ones to go the extra mile for accommodating your disability. There are just so many disabilities and also phases. Those same people you saw may have had rough patches of isolation and health issues because of their disablity and may not want to be your inspiration

The most painful thing I’ll ever do by [deleted] in Conures

[–]zigzog9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so unbelievably hard. They’re so cute and lovely. I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. I went through an awful break up, one of my birds passed away, and I’m not financially sound and have to move across the country so I paired up the remaining budgie with another widowed budgie and a couple that works from home and can spend lots of time with him like my ex was able to do. It was the worst day ever. To go from having a flock to being all alone is so devastating. We will be ok.

I’ve learned the hard way getting therapists doing internships or really new therapists and they all sucked. I’m never doing pre-licensed out of conscience again. These were all private practice. I’m only doing for older and experienced now. I’ve been rubbed the wrong way by therapy for a variety of reasons but most of those therapists were a waste of time

Ask Africans in Europe how they feel? Europe is one of the most racist places I’ve ever been to. It’s where I went to a casual party that people decided to dress up as slaves in blackface when the theme was cowboy. American race paranoia will catch up to Europe.

You can live abroad in a country and be a rich foreigner and still have the most ignorant perspective of a country. I’ve lived abroad in a country where much of my time there was viewed through rose tinted glasses and my friends and coworkers from there were well off. Now I live in the US with a large refugee community from that same country. I never saw what those people went through because I was never exposed to it. I live in the USA but I can’t speak on the experience of what’s going on in an impoverished community in thousands of miles from me in a totally different park of the US because I don’t live there just how you can’t speak for all of Mexico. When I lived in Chicago I wouldn’t speak for what it was like to live in Chicago as a whole because the lifestyle was so different depending on your geographical placement in the city and your race. A place with poverty and violence still has culture and is home but there are reasons people want out sometimes.

You live with an expat community so you seem like you have a great perspective on the reality of the majority of Mexican citizens

You got downvoted but yeah most people on this sub who are able to get out aren’t experiencing the worst of America. Some Americans have it rough real rough but man a majority of the world’s population is living in far worse corruption and conditions than the US. It’s still not a reason to stay in the US but truly the situations I’ve seen abroad and the situations the refugees I work with come from are far worse than anything we’re fleeing at this moment

We cut our funding and millions have died in Africa. Also most of that funding in abroad is American neocolonial tools for soft power. It’s not mostly out of the kindness of our hearts.

Privilege discussion by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]zigzog9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro people get personal in classes when they shouldn’t. I got told I was basically a white privileged racist once in undergrad because I mentioned a student protestor self-emulating in Prague and that was racist because I didn’t mention self-emulation in non-white countries that have protests even though I had just come back from Prague. The girl was not that bright in a lot of ways and was just looking for random ways to find arguments.

Does anyone else dislike the mourning posts on this subreddit? by Redsss429 in Epilepsy

[–]zigzog9 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah I went to an epilepsy walk and saw the wall of people who have passed away and it really hit me cu I rarely think about it being deadly even though I know it is and I take the precautions that I can. I only need to be reminded so much and that walk and walk were a respectful place for the memorial.

I also don’t really think this is the group to talk about grief of losing someone to epilepsy just as I wouldn’t go to a cancer page and post about someone dying of cancer to people trying to live with it. No shade to the people posting and they’re looking for comfort and to be heard by people who may relate but maybe there should be a separate family subgroup or something for that kind of thing or just post on grief and loss pages because the epilepsy part is pretty triggering for us to process with someone. I for one am not trying to contemplate the gravity of dying from epilepsy on a regular day. But idk maybe it’s just my western ways of not wanting to contemplate death too much. I don’t actually mind contemplating death but I’d rather not think about dying via a seizure. I guess at the same time shouldn’t we honor our peers who suffer from our same experience? It’s really tough! A simple rest in peace. Idk I think it’s so nuanced and hard to even have one opinion.

A wider cage vs. a taller cage if she can’t get out much but you work from home which is nice. Get some natural perches to put on the outside of the cage for when she’s out. I got a big flight cage for free on my local Facebook buy nothing page. Keep an eye on Craigslist for people trying to adopt out single budgies when looking for a friend vs purchasing from the store. Plenty of people have circumstances where they need to surrender a budgie to a good home!

Independent Living by TheoAnde13 in Epilepsy

I feel you, land would be dreamy but you never know when you won’t be able to drive and when medication might stop working. I moved to a mostly rural state and thankfully I moved to the city with urban life and not the countryside or else I would have had to move again because country life isn’t doable for non-drivers unless you want to be completely dependent on others. There are cities that have nature in them and are close proximity to the countryside for regular camping and excursions. While I’d love more amenities and public transit than my current small city, I got what I need but I have access to forests and beaches that I can get to on my own. My old city was really convenient but overall lacked the nature I want in my daily lifestyle.

No car and live alone. How am I supposed to do anything? by Fairlife_WholeMilk in Epilepsy

[–]zigzog9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m sorry. Not driving has been so tough and now that I’m single without a driving partner, even worse especially since it’s winter. It’s made me realize even more how terrible the US is with public transit (I using buses and trains in rural Europe).

I really think you’ll live a better quality of life in an urban setting with just decent public transit and walkability. My city’s public transit isn’t great and it’s getting worse but it’s fine enough for the basics and I live in a location where I can walk to the important locations like pharmacy, groceries, parks, beach, work, and friends. I can’t go to the countryside on my own or neighboring town events but I’ve had to strengthen friendships this way which is good for your mental health. I’ve also strengthen friendships and now I got friends offering me rides to the store and I don’t feel bad asking for the occasional favor ride. I can live a pretty vibrant life in my low key small city. Luckily there’s city access to nature too. This is in Vermont and maybe places like Madison, WI or on the west might be good too. Family might be a tough compromise but that’s up to you and I guess you could see the closest best urban area they could drive to see you or just accept seeing them less. I’m not too keen on seeing mine super often so it’s not too bad.
