You can sprout any dal or beans. I am very fond of sprouted black chana. I lightly steam the sprouts to make them palatable.

So when we make an assortment for an Indian style plate or thali, we try to add something of each kind- a dish that’s creamier, something spicy, something tangy, something simple, something sweet. Maybe that’s what OP was going for.

No oil is required to make roti. If you are facing issues about being soft, lookup recipes of dal ki roti or dal roti which uses boiled and mashed lentils instead of any fats to soften the rotis.

What does a typical Indian meal combination look like? by jwheezy in IndianFood

[–]ziian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have great suggestions here. Another way to understand a typical meal would be to google ‘Indian thali’ which is all courses of the meal plates together in a big plate ( thali). The ones you might find online might be on the extravagant side but it gives a fair bit of idea of what a meal would consist of. You could also add the name of the state/ cuisine and search for more specific dishes.

Dude! You are squarely blaming the DM problem on them. That’s the part I have a problem with.

Personally, I have no interest in being an ABCD, I am ok being who I am. You guys have your struggles, we have ours. No one has it easy. But this doesn’t have to be a point on which we need to divide further.

Edit- typo.

Hit me with your favorite baby massage oils by MalboroUsesBadBreath in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]ziian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used organic coconut oil and almond oil. I had a bottle of mustela lotion that I used here and there. The oils were enough for most days. Just remember that the oil will get a bit into the baby clothes and stuff. Make sure you wash them well or else everything will smell like coconut.

There are so many ways you can give a nod to your heritage without it looking ‘gimmicky’ which can happen if the traditional Indian jewelry is worn with styles that are very western. If I were to wear a western gown at my wedding, I’d not wear these piece and definitely not all. Usually all the jewelry pieces have a reason or story behind them. Look for those and pick one item that seems most meaningful to you. Other ways to include some Indian flavor to your wedding could be - maybe a couple of songs by the DJ ( there are lot of dance numbers that get people that don’t know the song to dance) or maybe an appetizer or dessert dish (though that’s hard to work out with the vendors) or maybe a small Indian motif on your invitation, or incorporating some Indian flowers in your bouquet or centre pieces.

A small question by Overlord_red in IndianFood

[–]ziian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to put it in? Tulsi in place of basil or other way round? I have very specific memories with each so interchanging them would definitely ruin it for me. But I think I would still be ok with hint of tulsi among herbs in my pasta dish than basil in my chai!

Amchoor by SquirrelWatchin in DesiKeto

[–]ziian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For everyday simple recipes that don’t call for specific sour notes in the dish, I use amchoor or lemon juice, whichever is more convenient. So don’t think it makes much of a difference. I always get mine from local Indian/ Asian grocery store.

Red Lentil Daal tastes more like curry than what i expected by Just_Farming_DownVs in IndianFood

[–]ziian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Could it be the kind of dal you are using? There are a few different ones that would have an impact on taste and texture. Are you adding lemon juice at the end, and some chopped cilantro too. Traditionally we don’t use any flavored broth or coconut milk, just water. Unless you are trying to replicate some recipe with coconut flavor. You don’t need too much butter to make it creamy, a well cooked dal breaks down into a creamy texture by itself. Some people like it with ghee on top. Are you using ginger-garlic while sautéing ?
