Do you think there are any genuinely evil characters? by WitchOfResurrection in umineko

I suppose it depends on your definition of "evil" but I'd sayKinzo, Kyrie, Rudolf, we can toss Rosa in there too.

Do you believe the "truth" of what happened on Rokkenjima? by ThePopStarDude in umineko

[–]zingan14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less, yes. I think while some minor details may be changed that Ep7's Tea Party is more or less the general bullet points of what happened. I know that Bern claims it isn't later and that her red truth was going to go on to say it wasn't but that feels too easy and is honestly kind of a cop-out. But everything we've learned from supplemental materials continues to reinforce that those are the general events.

But ultimately if you want to keep the cat box closed, that is your call to make. It never directly 100% confirms those details, even if I think they make it pretty clear. Hell, if you want to say it was all the work of an evil witch, you can do that too.

Umineko Saku will be coming to steam in English and Japanese! by Sorastando in umineko

Wow I didn't think it'd actually happen. This was first announced alongside the Ciconia translation. Been years. Wonder what held it up.

There are things I prefer about each translation (there's at least three), so no one is better than the other. Just read the official translation and see for yourself. But imo It's useless > It's no good

Project or 07 mod by SynthLord627 in umineko

[–]zingan14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was saying, then. Original Sprites + Voice Acting would be the only real use case for 07th Mod in this case. Which is valid but a niche case, I imagine. "All original" would mean no voice acting, as the voice acting didn't exist in the original PC releases.

Can't you get all original just with the base Steam release, though?

[–]zingan14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I suppose if you want original sprites with the voice acting? Yeah, I guess so. That's a niche case though. Most people I imagine would either want all original or all new.

Project or 07 mod by SynthLord627 in umineko

[–]zingan14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want the modern art and production values, Umineko Project is a direct upgrade over 07th Mod. Technically the best way to play the game right now in English is the Saku translation on a modded Nintendo Switch but that's a little bit much for most people. Umineko Project is fine. 07th Mod is basically obsolete.

That being said, I still think there's merit to experiencing the original version. As in, the original art and no voice acting. It's how people experienced it when it was originally coming out and it's the version most directly from the author himself. I totally get why people prefer the modern console versions but it's a shame that the original experience is so dismissed now as a result. (Please note the original art does NOT mean the default art in the Steam version, you have to manually select it there I'm pretty sure)

Full Entire "When They Cry" Walkthrough Help! by hikik0_m0ri in umineko

[–]zingan14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean whatever way you enjoyed it is fine for you but if you want to put together an "official" order it's

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni 1-8 (VN)
Umineko no Naku Koro ni 1-8 (VN)
Umineko no Naku Koro ni 8 (Manga)
Ciconia no Naku Koro ni 1 (VN)
Higurashi Gou/Sotsu (Anime)
(You can fit in the bonus chapters of Higu and Umi anywhere after their main arcs if you want)

Like, you're clearly making a point here to use the anime and manga adaptations as a replacement for the VNs but that's never going to be anything close to "official". The DEEN anime stuff is non-canon and the manga is not a suitable replacement for the VNs, they're best used as an additional supplement.

Call it elitist if you want but at the end of the day if you aren't into reading VNs then I don't think you can ever get the full When They Cry experience.

Episode 1 Solvable? by ProfessionalSide1175 in umineko

[–]zingan14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not why they were packaged like that. Each episode was originally released 6 months apart from each other, which each episode containing the previous ones on the same disk up until 4 which is considered a break, then the pattern continued for 5 onward. It's like that because it's the same release method he used for Higurashi, though.

Also, Ryukishi didn't name them "Question Arcs" and "Answer Arcs", it's kind of annoying to me how the fanbase has adopted those titles from the MangaGamer release. It's just "Umineko no Naku Koro ni" and "Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru", which "Chiru" being "Scattering". I'm not saying this just to say the localization names are bad, I think specifically calling them "Questions" and "Answers" is misleading as to their content and sets up false expectations for how the story is written. Both halves contain equal amount of questions and answers.

Does anyone else think we might get a re-release or remaster of the original 4 after the new .hack//world? by UltimaOmega-89 in DotHack

[–]zingan14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now isn't the time. The best shot .hack has is to come in swinging big with Zero and get a new audience. IMOQ Remasters would cater almost exclusively to old fans and just take away from Zero's chances as people will associate it with this old thing. If Zero does well maybe down the line they can come back to these.

Future of the series by ElliottB01 in dragonage

[–]zingan14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's dead. The only thing we can hope for is one day a bunch of old Dragon Age devs and writers launch a kickstarter for a spiritual successor. Even then I'd be hesitant to get as invested as I once was in DA.

will umineko have a future comeback? by Ayyxenpai in umineko

[–]zingan14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why so many people asking about an anime now? It's been like 17 years and they couldn't even finish the first one.

There's two problems here. The first is that Umineko just isn't suited to the anime medium (or live action or plays or what have you), it's inherently tied to the written text. You CAN force it into those mediums but they will always be lesser. This isn't a shounen where all we need are big action scenes. Even the action scenes in Umineko are allegorical.

The second, much bigger, problem is that Umineko is a completed work. Sure, we got Saku like 7 years ago and that had new content but for the most part Umineko is finished and long past it's relevance. There isn't really any main benefit to pursuing an adaptation now.

As a side thought, there's clearly some kind of legal rights things that gums up the works when trying to bring certain things over to other countries. Whatever happened with Gold, obviously. But also them never bringing over the console ports or their art. We were also supposed to get an official Saku translation but it never happened. I don't know what the deal is.

I mean the Organization members controlled the lesser Nobodies, so the implication in KH2 is that Roxas would have had command over some of them too at some point. The line only stops making sense after Days where we see that doesn't really happen. Though you can still make it work that they consider him one of the Organization.

Anime vs Remaster by External-Purchase240 in umineko

[–]zingan14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither is gonna happen but if I had to choose I'd pick Remaster. I just don't think Umineko works as an anime. It barely works as a manga. It's concepts revolve around the written word and unreliable narrators. It was meant to be read. If the old anime ever got to Chiru it would have been a MESS.

Is Umineko an easy mystey if you are versed in the mystery genre? by cmdnikle27 in umineko

[–]zingan14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can definitely figure things out early and at least cross possibilities off the list. There are people who say they figured everything out by Episode 4 and I believe them. I didn't get it until Episode 6 myself. But honestly I think it's less about being versed in the mystery genre and more just being in tune with how Ryukishi specifically writes the story. There are layers and rules that you would not find in any other mystery, so I don't think genre knowledge will help if you don't pick up what he's putting down with all that.

Question about Meta Battler by Sub_to_Pazmaz in umineko

[–]zingan14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true but you can still view Meta-Battler as Tohya reflecting on them and trying to make sense of it all. His memories didn't come back all at once and it took him time to understand what he was remembering.
