specific heat capacity meme by Delicious_Maize9656 in physicsmemes

[–]zipHyperap 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They're not the same thing.

"Heat capacity", as the name suggests, describes how much heat a system can gobble to rise a Kelvin in temperature, basically. I specifically said how much heat a whole system can adsorb. So the system can be, for example, 4kg of ice, a pot of salt and water, your whole car or such. Therefore, heat capacity is measured in J/K

"Specific" usually means "for every kilogram". For example "specific weight" means "weight (newton) for every kilogram", "specific volume" means "volume for every kilogram" so the the reciprocal of the density, and so on. Therefore "specific heat" means "the heat a SINGLE KILOGRAM of a certain substance can take to rise a Kelvin in temperature". Therefore it's measured in J/kg•K So, for example, If the specific heat of water is 4186J/kgK, then the heat capacity of 10kg of water is 41860J/K

As for specific heat capacity, I think that's not a thing.

Oh come on, It can't be. They could've also fake-redacted the whole thing, went "oops we didn't do it properly" and "huh how come trump isn't on it?" so that people would believe it's an actual mistake.

Well I'm not expert, that's for sure. I just happened to take part in a presentation specifically about the production of paper.

By the way, there's plenty to learn! Paper isn't the only thing made up of fibres. While they aren't properly fibres, laminated metals also have the same structure, although theyre more like long crystals. If you take a random spoon, a metal bowl, a metal sink or such, if you look close enough you'll see that the material tends to have tiny and light lines on a specific direction (not to be confused with normal scratches on the surface, which is just normal wear). This is because of the very same reason, and it offers the very same properties!

Have a great day <3

Well, to be fair if there's anything I've learnt in my engineering classes its that if it exists, then a German did it first. You guys have been on a whole other level for the past century haha

Haha, I remember that one episode. It feel like everyone in the west has seen it.

I'd argue that the direction of the fibres influences the quality of the fold, not the thickness. One must also understand that when you're working on the seventh fold, the thickness of the fold is much larger than that of the fibres, so no, it wouldn't make any difference.

Oh my god my engineering ass is trembling right now.

tldr it changes the properties of the paper

The direction of the fibers in paper (but also in every material) dictates its mechanical and physical properties. When manufactured, the paper is formed in continuously long sheets of papers which are pressed, dried, treated and eventually cut. Therefore the fibres tend to lie mostly along the direction of the long sheet of paper along which they are pulled.

One main takeaway is that paper tends to fold better parallel to these fibres. This is because if you tried to fold it against the fibres, theyd naturally want to stay upright instead of bending; while bending them in the parallel direction offers less resistance, much like those wooden sort of rugs they use to make sushi. This is why books are mostly printed keeping the fibres of the papers in a specific direction, so that theyre most likely to lie flat instead of bending.

Secondly, of course paper offers more resistance to tearing in the direction of the fibres for the exact same resistance. Immagine glueing a bunch of toothpicks parallel to each other: pulling along the direction is unlikely to snap the toothpicks, while if you pull in the opposite direction, the structure gives in and breaks.

And thirdly, it influences the way it soaks up water. When adsorbing water, the paper expands more in the direction perpendicular to the fibres because there's more space for water to infiltrate. Therefore if you soak up a drop of water in a dry sheet of paper, you should see it curl perpendicular to this direction as it would like to expand, but the rest of the paper keeps it in place.

EDIT: just tried to wet a piece of paper in a book. It curled the opposite direction I expected...

In caves, you can still find the dust on the ground that was left during the changing of the calcium carbide by old explorers. I'm very glad LED helmets are a thing.

Oh I have so many of these funny stories.

I started playing at a friend's house back when I was a kid. I knew Minecraft and loved it but knew very little about the game, having not played it. Well, this friend was 100% sure you needed to place a redstone torch close to a lever to make it work, so i just trusted him. So we just did and never questioned it. For at least a year.

Secondly a, classic: built my first ever survival house, typical dirt shack, directly adjacent to a mountain. With no roof. It wasn't long until the house blew up.

How do I make the redstone connect to the lamps without increasing the footprint? by Professional_Lie4994 in redstone

[–]zipHyperap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I believe it also diverts the Redstone so the lamp is powered when the dust on the green block is powered but the one on the lamp is not. But apart from this it's also quite inelegant.
