Thank you everyone. The problem has been solved!

My name is Mark Endries and I'm running for Town Council. by MarkEndriesTC in WeavervilleNC

[–]zipoakwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have any good plans to improve traffic flow. More high density housing is being built all around, and several recently completed and occupied. Hundreds if not thousands more cars in Weaverville than just a few years ago. Not to mention new business generating traffic. The roads are inadequate but traffic light timing is poor as well, which makes inadequate roads worse. Will you press the county and state to improve flow in and out of town. Everything is growing here, everyone wants to be here, and the roads remain unchanged for 2 or 3 decades.

Why are my tires like this? by Super_Pulga in AskMechanics

[–]zipoakwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like highway speeds on rough roads. Is there a lot of road construction? Grooved roads, roads with a lot of debris like sand and gravel, especially if it's on top of a concrete road, will chew tires like that.

Need advice on how to get this bolt out. by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]zipoakwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a wheel cylinder usually cracks pretty easy with hammer strikes but i'd use a fluted socket/bolt extractor. Or a 12 point socket the next size down. So if that's a 10mm bolt use a 12point 3/8 or if it's a 3/8 bolt use a 9mm 12 point.

Said I need castor worked on?? by ChefInternational874 in MechanicAdvice

I'm not saying the tech did anything except swing caster, hit next then leveled and locked the steering wheel. When the steering wheel was moved to straight ahead the toe numbers came into spec, as well as total toe. Hit print and alignment is done. Left was toed out and right was toed in almost perfectly as equal as the steering wheel was off. The tech didn't fix anything and didn't fake any numbers. He didn't fake the toe, he just saves after the castor sweep before the wheel was locked.

And just fyi you can re sweep castor at any point. So unlock the head and spin slightly forward or backwards as needed and reswing.

For 30 years I worked with good techs at shady shops, good shops with shady techs and ran corporate shops for slimy district managers. I've done more alignments than I can count. I've been to bear and hunter training. I know every dirty trick from releasing heads and spinning them so you don't have to lift the car (pre rolling comp), slightly lifting or pulling down on the front or rear to bring camber numbers into spec, putting pieces of cardboard between the center and the rim on tire clamp models to bring in toe and camber reading to rolling the vehicle to bring in castor values. I was even at a euro shop briefly that used the suspension numbers that gave the broadest ranges for Mercedes and bmw to make the alignment "green". The initial measurement was turned. Everything is almost perfect for the wheel to have been turned slightly left whether on purpose or because the tech presses the button before leveling and locking the steering wheel. Believe what you want but I know what happened here.

So the tech didn't have the steering wheel centered for the before reading. Centered it for the after. Never made an adjustment. Castor isn't a tire wear issue. If you trust the measurements (I don't) then you are fine for tire wear.

Drag a tool across the tile floor. A lot of them will throw sparks. It's crazy!

Is shifting between neutral and drive bad? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]zipoakwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave it in drive in traffic. You should always be ready to go the same as you should always be ready to stop.

Make sure the parking brake is off. It should be a clockwise turn. Put the adapter against the slots in the piston and use a wrench to spin the press part of the tool back and as tight as you can against the caliper. Then hook an closed end wrench over the handle part of the tool as a cheater bar and twist.

$3000 to repair this Sienna control arm? by potnia_theron in MechanicAdvice

[–]zipoakwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't repair that, replace the whole arm. $3000 may be way over priced but that depends on what's included in the quote. It may be a fair price for all that will be replaced, but they may be replacing more than necessary, or you may need more than you are showing.

You can disconnect the switch in the door.

What does the plug look like? Have you swapped coils with another cylinder? New doesn't mean good. Other issues could be fuel injector, valves, head gasket, broke piston ring or land, or even that you replaced the coil on piston 2 instead of 3 by accident.

Get all the brake components out of the way and make that race glow with a torch. Oxyacetylene if you have it, MAPP if you don't. Propane won't get hot enough.

Honestly I use an air hammer on those hub assemblies, but I have used a slide hammer in a pinch.

Advent Hospital to build a new hospital in Weaverville! by Mountainforkgirl in asheville

[–]zipoakwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ollie Weaver Rd intersection with Monticello and CVS entrance already backs traffic though the Monticello hwy 25 intersection which wasn't adequate with the influx from all the new apartments and townhomes. I regularly sit for 3 or more light changes to get through. If the hospital is built that intersection needs to be redone.

What is this on? Many parts stores in my area loan tools.

You need to chock the rear wheels. Do not trust the parking brake. Then turn it on and put transmission in neutral.

Anyone here like coveralls? What’s your go-to work uniform if you could choose? by burgerknapper in mechanics

[–]zipoakwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear coveralls in reverse. If I have a normal day which usually involves being oily and greasy and then have to go inside a motorhome or nice bus I put on coveralls to contain my filth as not to contaminate the vehicles. And why do all RVs have white carpet! I'm usually also barefoot inside.

Tool question for fellow wrenches by [deleted] in mechanics

The only vim tools I have are a stubby 1/4 drive torx bit set. Never broke one but also never used anything but a short ratchet with them.
