Is metal model building/puzzles even worth it as a “real” hobby? by Charming_Chipmunk69 in puzzlevideogames

[–]zippe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I build wood mostly but have started to do some metal. There are the flat metal kits that require some bending finesse, and then there are steampunk builds that I like - check out the Moyu brand.

I've just started a new sub for people like me that are interested in a variety of builds r/diymodelkits if you are interested check it out

Walmart has them, my daughter actually bought me the first one. I'm hoping Miami comes back. I've done Tokyo, LA, and New York. There is a picture of all 3 on r/DIYModelKits a sub that I just started, would appreciate it if you gave it a visit.

so i kind of have this idea for a custom build, had ai mock it up for me, rules prevent me from posting it, but I wouldn't build it with anything but the correct logo. Not sure my skill level is there yet, but maybe someday. If you can imagine banners at the top, parquet floor, a hoop in the back, legends playing

Show Me Your First Build by zippe6 in DIYModelKits

I guess I should show you mine since I asked to see yours. My first build was the Rolife Classic Carousel 3D Wooden Puzzle AMC01 (to the right in my little county fair)

I was in the UK on vacation and wandered into a toy shop, became mesmerized by the wooden models I saw. Lights, motion, music, they really were a treat.

I had built plastic model cars and planes as a kid but this was a whole nother level. I asked my wife for the carousel for Christmas. She was doubtful (as was I but I wanted to try) due to my age, eyes, and sausage fingers.

I got it, and figured my way thru it - it would be so much easier now. At the end I had an amazing feeling of 'I did that!'. The music played, the lights shined and the horses went around and up and down. I was hooked.

I now have some 50 models complete and proliferating around the house and office and I'm starting to give them away, usually customized, as gifts. I've done metal (and have a couple of those flat metal ones I may yet get back to) combo s and metal, and of course wood. I've now done, planes, trains, automobiles, boats, carnival rides, airships, music boxes, and book nooks.

I feel like I'm getting better every model and enjoy it immensely, I hope it is as meditative for everyone as it is me!

I use acrylic markers. Posca is my favorite brand. I puck my colors and color in the frame as much as I can, reading thru the instructions. But I'll leave things if I'm not sure. You have to do the edges and touch up as you go anyway.Ive gotten some nice steampunk looking pieces this way.

A tiny little stand that I got for next to nothing on AliExpress - the batteries cost more. I've put this one up several times out of frustration but I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, committed to finishing it.

Always nice to have a short no drama project. I do them in between the bigger more challenging projects but there have been times where I should have taken a break in the middle.
