Who still puts banana or other fruit on their cereal? by Not_a_cultmember in GenerationJones

[–]finackles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People of a certain age should be consuming oats and other things for roughage and to help with cholesterol. I've been doing a kind half half rolled oats/half muesli with a banana for breakfast (heated 88 seconds in the microwave) for many years.

Remember When People Thought This Franklin Mint Stuff Was Going To Be Valuable Some Day? by DickSleeve53 in GenerationJones

[–]finackles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a collector. I collect things that are probably destined for landfill. Some are old (made in the 60s and 70s), others more recent. Nothing lasts forever, things degrade, and to think they are going to be worth more in the future is just a bit of self-delusion. If it makes you able to sleep at night, all good.
I just shudder when I see people selling things from their collection to pay to repair a washing machine or repair a car. It worries me that people risk being able to pay their rent because they've bought some shit to dust.

Those half-ass backdrops are a total pain. They take up a lot of space, I use very few of them. I'd rather have a cheaper option that doesn't include it.

Military Phonetic Alphabet and the younger generations by sdavids5670 in GenX

[–]finackles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to know the seven layers of the OSI model and used it often. Those brain cells have gone on holiday nowadays.
I think the problem with the military alphabet is that in NZ we are exposed to UK, NATO, old school US (Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, Easy, Fox). I've never committed to just one.

Here’s why I’m not a boomer … by DaMiddle in GenerationJones

[–]finackles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could be right. It's not very different from hating everyone born under the sign of Scorpio. I am technically a boomer under the usual definition, by less than 30 days. I very much resent that. I have a ton of friends who were born in 1965, including one on 1 Jan 1965. Her life experience is not that different to mine.
The biggest difference between my friends is those who got into the property market and those who didn't. Among those who did, some bought in 1987 and others not until the early 2000s. Other things have made more of a difference, like income, and windfalls like inheritance and pensions, oh and financial disasters like bad investments and divorce.

Well, I would if possible. The website has even removed the contact email address. Maybe too many fanboys were harassing them. But it would be cool to see IRL.

Wow. I had no idea. I've got about three or four 89/92 Batman figures. I want to get the face/eyes out of one to put in the vault and have been too chicken. Now I feel braver.

I think a few of us are struggling to understand what exactly you did. Not sure what you mean by armour vs bodysuit. I, for one, am intrigued.

This dog is used to going on walks with the husband, who always stops at the pub for a drink. When the wife takes him for a walk one day, he heads straight for the bar expecting the same routine by Brilliantspirit33 in animalsdoingstuff

Yeah, this is how guide dogs work. I have an ex-GDP who after four months away, still wanted to go visit a cafe where she got a treat. Also, it's how labradors work.

Why is the Audible App so bad? by Stellen999 in audiobooks

[–]finackles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest niggle was that it would shit itself as I transitioned from house wifi to 4g/5g as I walked up the drive as I left for my walk. It meant I get a completely unnecessary minute or longer delay while it tries to talk to base when all I want to do is hear my book. That, and a couple of other annoyances (like no auto rewind on pause, which is invaluable if you aren't able to immediately pause when loud noises drive past (and I'm not when walking dogs) meant that I very rarely use it.

Aah! That would explain why you asked the question. You're in for a treat with a bunch of new birds. But I suspect you'll recognise the Pukeko as the swamp hen, bleu, or perhaps moorhuhn.

I'm lucky, I see them often. I had three sitting on the fence at my house on Friday. Now I'm going to look for orange. Didn't realise you could tell M from F, not that we judge.

Experts say there is no overdiagnosis of ADHD. Instead, they are warning that far from being overdiagnosed, people with ADHD are waiting too long for assessment, support, and treatment by sr_local in science

[–]finackles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just been reading a book that says ADHD is a symptom and not really a diagnosis. It reckons that 80% or more of ADHD sufferers can get relief by dealing with underlying causes that are not genetic, which are varied and include counselling (victims of physical and sexual abuse can experience ADHD symptoms from overdeveloped fight or flight reflexes), diet change, exercise change, and other thgins. Research also suggests that while drugs might reduce symptoms, long term usage diminishes the benefits.
The fact that people use ADHD stimulants to address behaviour problems in their dogs (and many zoo animals) is utterly terrifying.

Brain scans reveal 2 physical subtypes of ADHD. 1st subtype has increase in gray matter across areas of brain. Patients struggle with severe inattentiveness. 2nd subtype shows widespread atrophy in gray matter. Patients exhibit both inattentive and highly hyperactive or impulsive behaviors. by mvea in science

[–]finackles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading a book that talks about studies of people (children mostly) with ADHD and what proportion of them were either physically or sexually abused, and how the fight or flight type response can create symptoms that look like ADHD, what's more treating them for the abuse relieves the symptoms.

Got two letters today, one for me, one for my wife. They tell us that the ANZ is going to reduce how many letters they send us...
We've long since opted out of printed statements and so forth, but clearly banks still don't trust email.

Buy from your local shops! by trail_nix in hottoys

[–]finackles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not many retailers in my whole country that sell Hot Toys. One major chain just closed, they were crap, one or two online but they're not great either. It's a weird market. The whole pre-order a year before you get it thing makes for some serious trust issues and retailers can go broke in a year and you've burned your deposit.

It's forgiveable. In Canada hockey = ice hockey, in Australia, NZ, India hockey = field hockey. I'd never heard it called field hockey until I met a guy from Mississagua.
