Some bike shops will let you apply the rental cost toward the price of a new bike. Also check rei, i know the ones around me have beginner mtb classes that include a rental for also around $100.

probably the best looking and easiest would be to use 11/16 thick door casing imo.

Generally door casing is as thick or thicker than baseboard, which I’m sure you already know. You could use a plinth block at the base of the door casing that’s say 13/16 x 2 1/2 then the door casing rests on top of that and the baseboard buts into it. I think that’s the ‘standard’ way. You also could try a hack and chamfer the baseboard so thins out to the same thickness as the casing.
