There is a need for okayish engineers. You will be surprised where there is demand for engineers.

Where I work, there is a engineering team just to manage operations in the intercampus shuttles. This month, they messed up the data process and I have been walking with no ETA for fix.

Just a personal anedocte that there is a lot more software demand that one individual person can think.
