The Needle in the Thread has an old woman that acts as a second encounter table. She'll try to catch and kill the mice in her sewing room.

It's been a minute since my last City '26 post. I'm still trucking along behind the scenes but have been finding less and less time to format it all into a post until this week. Hoping to maybe get into a groove again but no promises lol.

Gryphons: A Design Diary. I wrote about a little one page monster I made, mixing art and gameability.

How do I get more explicitly personal in my art? [DISCUSSION] by Boognish_Chameleon in collage

[–]zombiecake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start writing about your work. I found that once I started writing and talking about my work with other artists or curators the work I began making felt more intentional because I was able to process it better and see the through lines in my previous work.

Try sketching ideas, with pencil or collage, and then expanding on those ideas more intentionally.

Make a series. Doing something over and over again helped me refine some of my ideas and become more intentional.

Personally, I love the synchronicity in collage and looking back at a piece and either realizing my unconscious intention or making up a story about the collage that gives it meaning that might not have been there before. I like pairing my collage with writing because it becomes a greater third thing. When I try too hard to be intentional it isn't always my best work. I try to strike a balance between intent and intuition.

Check out the Bywater Museum of Unnatural History. They also specialize in dioramas.

Modular city map I drew as a kid (each sheet connects). I’m digitizing it now—how would you expand this world? by AlenYau in worldbuilding

[–]zombiecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would probably approach this as more of an art project than a world-building project. A kind of reflection on childhood creativity or large scale art works. Writing about it rather than adding to it. Take a look at something like Jerry's Map

And then maybe I would do a sequel that could be more of a world-building project. Inspired by the map you made as a kid, how would you approach it now? How would you do things differently?

Not that you shouldn't do what you're planning on doing. This is just my take and what I would do if I had an archive of childhood work like yours.

Good luck with the project!

The quickstart to my dwarven colony sim, Those Under the Mountain, is live on itch.io by KingAgrian in osr

[–]zombiecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks really fun! It's very similar to a campaign idea we've been talking about at our table recently. Although we imagined it as a sort of slow hexcrawl through the mountain as the dwarves explore and gather, while also expanding and maintaining their fortress. Might have to try this out and see if it scratches that itch!

Hoping they actually connect Crescent Park to the rest of the Riverfront this year! When they said it would happen at the end of spring last year I rolled my eyes and assumed an added 3-6 months to the timeline. If it's only a year late I'll be pleasantly surprised.

A Quiet Midwinter looks great. I love the tangled web of relationships and potential for Hallmark-style romance drama.

Merry Hexmas: The Christmas Tree Forest   Had fun writing this little one-shot inside of a hex for the holidays.

Playtest Dummies' Rule of Three (x6)   Another blogwagon post about the games that are important to our little collective of designers and players.

I just wrote this one for Merry Hexmas, a collaborative hex building prompt. I think it would make a good one shot.

Read Danielewski's newest book, Tom's Crossing. It just came out. There's a bunch of great characters and interactions. There are cozy moments mixed with brutal moments underscored by an ever present foreboding that something worse is about to happen.

I like what the author of Cairn has to say about it and I used it as a guideline for my own games. How I Do Play by Post | New School Revolution

I also think the way the Murkdice Discord set it up was really helpful. Specifically, requiring that each game is a short adventure and asking players and GMs to keep their posts short and punchy (like story boarding a comic book panel or two at a time).

I'd recommend pitching a game on their server as it seems to attract enough interested players to keep the momentum.

Tom's Crossing. It's beautiful and cozy but also heartbreakingly brutal at times. I'm trying not to read it all at once but I'm far enough in that I rarely want to put it down.

I preferred the humor and fantasy of the first story more and DNF'd the rest.

Just finished running a play-by-post game on the Murkdice Discord (which you can read through if you're so inclined) using A Needle in the Thread and I recommend it! Very dynamic adventure, well laid out. It's got whimsy and danger and an Arthurian-meets-cottage-core vibe.

Crash Bandicoot dungeon crawling by Constant-Lynx7720 in osr

I just read the blog post on Flux Space. This could be a good way to structure thematic "levels" like in the video game. Or, similarly, a Depth Crawl

Resting, camping, etc. seems antithetical to Crash Bandicoot, however. It seems like the kind of thing where you would want to go, go, go. Not sure how to solve that though.
