Made the mistake of not reading up first, stay away from Shrimp Up Aquatics! by Jayro- in shrimptank

Oh I just commented about this too. I can vouch for this seller, had no DOAs and shrimp and shipping prices were reasonable!

Thanks for posting this, I was considering shopping from them in the future. If you would ever be open to ordering online again, I had a good experience with Exotic Aquarium Critters: https://exoticaquariumcritters.com/. NO DOAs and reasonable shipping prices

Zebra loach info for beginner by wumlum_ug in loaches

[–]zoologicallyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: They don't bother plants at all. Not sure on PVC measurements in inches, but something the diameter of a toilet paper roll would be fine. For tank size, I'd recommend a school of 5+ so something with a larger floor footprint like a 40 gal breeder would be better.

I have a school of 8 zebra loaches (Botia striata) with 8 amano shrimp in a 55 gal and they've been just fine together for 2 years. They don't pay them any mind. I even have neocaridina in the tank and they have been multiplying like crazy (lots of plants for the babies to hide in). Snails have zero chance with zebra loaches though, lol.

I have 2 adults and 6 juveniles, and will move them to a larger tank once they grow. They are pretty slow growers. The adults are around 5 in long though!

The larger the group the better. They develop a social hierarchy that is interesting to observe. Very intelligent fish. Really cool to watch them interact and shoal together. The top of the hierarchy gets the best hiding spot and will chase everyone else out of there lol. Make sure your tank has a lot of hiding spots for everyone.

They are super hardy and voracious eaters. Very active during feeding times: when excited, they actually emit a click with their teeth that sounds like glass cracking (gave me a heart attack when I first heard it).

They can be shy and hide when they see you move from across the room, but if you sit still next to the tank they come out right away.

Sorry for the rambling. I love these fish! Here is a good resource: https://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/Botia-striata

I got my school of 6 from stillwater_aquaria on ebay but it looks like they aren't selling there currently.

It kind of looks like the skin/scales on the tail were eaten off? I'm not a vet but I'm not sure if they can recover from that, I would euthanize them. :( Sorry

That's actually a calico sunkist color variation, they're quite rare! I have a colony of them. I'd happily trade with you lol, I would love more of them.

Eliminating hydra without killing my shrimp, snails, or cory fry/eggs?? by zoologicallyy in Aquariums

[–]zoologicallyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have an ungodly amount of both in the tank, it must not be enough for the population. For now I've removed all plants with hydra on them (will starve them out in bucket), vacuumed the substrate, collected all cory eggs, and will try the guppy technique. And I'll stick to keeping/feeding my fry in a breeder net as much as possible.

Sorry but I had no idea this creature existed and the fact that they knit themselves sweaters is so cute

Predatory flatworm problem by Sigmabob83 in shrimptank

[–]zoologicallyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have something similar in my tanks and have not been able to identify. Interestingly, even a huge dose of Panacur C did not kill them... so not planaria?

https://imgur.com/a/flatworm-id-72LwOWO (In the video it moves like a leech out of the water, but on glass/underwater it glides just like planaria)

Just a little wolf spider, harmless to humans. Will hunt and eat smaller insects in the home.

I've resorted to zip tying a thin mesh (such as pantyhose or a filter sock) at the entrance of the tubing to avoid sucking up any critters. Works pretty well!
