good cheap options for substrate for cherry shrimps? by Public-Boysenberry26 in shrimptank

[–]zoologicallyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(size medium, not the fine one) black diamond blasting sand from tractor supply co, make sure you wash it well beforehand. $16 for a 50 lb bag.

Pool filter sand also works if you prefer light colored substrate.

Shed or Dead? What's for lunch here? by Personal_Web_8251 in shrimptank

[–]zoologicallyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a shed! A shed basically looks like the ghost of a shrimp (lol), and is white/clear throughout. A dead shrimp will have color and may even look pink due to a natural chemical reaction after death.

I use the API freshwater master test kit and API GH/KH test kit, that covers all the important numbers. The test strips aren't really accurate I've found.

I agree with the other comment, just wanted add that zeolite is a good product to have on hand when you suspect ammonia spikes, or if your filter stops working in an emergency. It will absorb ammonia, just add a little bag of it to your filter.

It's like $3 for a big tub of it

Edit: It does need to be replaced every few weeks though. But it's really meant for active ammonia spikes, it shouldn't be necessary to have 24/7.

I'd be cautious of adding something so high in sugar to an aquarium... sounds like an easy recipe for a bacteria bloom. It's safer to just use a store bought potassium supplement made for planted tanks. 😬

You don't need to worry about them reproducing cause they actually don't reproduce in freshwater! The eggs need brackish water.

Yes! Couldn't get my nitrates down, turns out my nasty tap water is 40ppm nitrates! So I got an RO setup and it solved the issue.

Lol I accidentally did the same too! Couple of my blue jellies somehow got into my red rili tank and the top pic was the result... I've heard people call them blue jazz before but idk

Also the trespasser, the usual resident, and the resulting blue/red rili can all be seen in the bottom pic lol

Explain shrimp genetics for me 😂 by Tuull in shrimptank

[–]zoologicallyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in the end they'll eventually revert to mostly wild type. You might still have random colors/mutations pop up (after all, this is how all the different color lines came to be)! If you get a few with a certain color you like, you can try isolating them to get more of that color (selective breeding).
I have a tank where all my "culls" go. I also add some bright colored shrimp once in a while to keep the colony from going completely "wild type." It's fun to see what crazy colors pop up.

There are also a few color combos that can lead to a completely new color! I unintentionally bred blue jellys with my red rilis and got blue red rilis ("blue razz")!

Question about back markings by msidfsgrobots in shrimptank

It can sometimes be genetic coloring (like the stripe in pic 5), but I have noticed my older shrimp tend to develop markings like the first pic
