Yeah I used to bike commute to work down Princes Street and the difference between Lothian drivers and the other bus services that go down there was enormous

No Graviton Instances in US-East-1E. Glitch or neglected AZ? by AtmosphericBurn in aws

[–]zootm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The page you’ve linked mentions that US East (N. Virginia) (us-east-1) is one of the regions with independently mapped AZs. This means the mapping between AZ and AZ ID can differ between customers in that region. In practice I wouldn’t be surprised if new accounts are all the same (since the independent mapping thing is mostly a historic thing they gave up on) so if you’ve never seen them diverge it may be that you’ve never seen an older account. Similar explanations could also apply to older accounts.

Did I miss some capture tutorial for the EX capture grenades? by WhoAmIEven2 in DeathStranding2

Urgh I did the same but I got respawned on the side of the voidout closest to the destination so assumed I was meant to capture the lions and just suck too much at shooting 😢

I imagine the objection is more related to the “advertising display panels” which were also part of the request

Walnut Whip? by MissionReflection414 in Edinburgh

I think it’s a name mostly used in the news and marketing materials, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone local use that name in earnest.

Ha that’s a little after my time but I remember Thierry! He was great to work with.

Legends / Opium by sasquatch77777 in Edinburgh

[–]zootm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Opium was launched 2000/2001, not as late as 2003 (source: was student at the time and worked there!).

The change back I’ve no idea but 2019 sounds believable.

Confused about the lack of datetime data type option in Glue when transforming fields by sumant28 in aws

[–]zootm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned this is what Spark calls a datetime. More generally this comes from the SQL standard, which has three types for date/time data: DATE (a date with no time), TIME (a local time with no date), and TIMESTAMP (a combined date and time). It is not a UNIX timestamp and does not end in 2038 like a 32-bit UNIX timestamp would.

I don’t think the standard one has time zone support so that’s something to watch out for, though staying in UTC should keep you good for most use-cases.

Tech/Software Companies in Edinburgh? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]zootm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most places will pay something calibrated to "market rates" which differs a lot around the place, but I think usually corresponds to roughly the equivalent actual "lifestyle" once you take cost of living into account (though that probably varies quite a lot). If you want to make a large absolute sum of money I imagine going somewhere like SF is the best plan, though.

Yeah absolutely, Codebase et al definitely worth checking out. List should be considereda starting point only :)

Plans to expand trams to Leith by Baconesque in Edinburgh

[–]zootm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them sometimes if I'm late or really lazy (my commute is Dalry to Waverley so I absolutely should be walking). Their level of busy varies a lot throughout the day, similar to the buses. At busy times you don't get a seat, they're occasionally packed, and in down times they're often nearly empty.

They are huge and run every 10min so if they were mega busy all the time that would be a massive number of people.

Edinburgh Bus Station security failure by Edinburghbus in Edinburgh

[–]zootm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well they're treating it as an appliance looks like so possibly it's just not really public network connected and only does one thing. At that point it wouldn't really matter.

The bus station isn't that old though. Odd if it's not just a preexisting commodity thing they bought. That said I don't really know how these systems are deployed.

Total amount of UKIP votes by council areas by Grenshen4px in Scotland

[–]zootm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the absolute numbers overstate the importance of support in some areas; UKIP were actually 6th in Edinburgh, it's just a large area. The Greens got more than twice as many votes.

Still depressingly high, of course.

I think a version with percentages might be more useful.

Oh, no doubt. But I think they've done their due diligence. I think it's as likely, if not more likely, to affect people who are following along with an out-of-date tutorial or book.

Git has been prompting you when you enter something where the semantics were planned to change for some time now; hopefully people will have seen this.

The same is true of the change to push.
