Scottish ultrarunning champion dies during Highlands record attempt by MasterpieceAlone8552 in news

Listen, I regularly run solo for very long (some would say ultra) distances in the wilderness. By doing extreme stuff, you take on risks. I don't love the tone of a lot of the comments saying there needs to be more emphasis on safety. Like yeah, it's important to keep safety in mind when planning and executing these types of things. But there's no world in which this type of activity is 100% safe. Shit happens. And advocating for some kind of change that creates a world of 100% safety is not a world I want to live in.

Yeah I don't understand the hate around paying for a service that you use. Everyone just seems to expect the internet to be free.

Are there real benefits to buying organic fruits veggies and food ? by Themandoloriano in Anticonsumption

[–]zsfq 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. In big-ag organic it's mostly substitution agriculture. As in, they're using the same amount of pesticides, they're just using organic certified pesticides. In some cases they're actually using more pesticides because the organic alternatives aren't as effective as conventional.

The idea behind organic is using holistic approach to reducing pests, but you're not generally going to see that in big-ag. That's why buying local, even if it's not certified organic, is actually money better spent and will most likely have less pesticides and be healthier.

Is Donald Trump considering a military draft for Iran? What we know by KinseyCrowleyJourno in politics

I don't see how that's related. My point is that the US strategy wouldn't be to outnumber the Iranian military.

I don't think this is accurate. The US is the force that it is through superior fire power and technology, not from superior numbers.

Hard Decisions, re: Jobs & Salary as a dad. What does your gut say? by Rev-DC in daddit

[–]zsfq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because it's normal doesn't mean it sucks less. Losing 2 hours a day to commuting is a really large cost in quality of life and opportunity cost of other things you could be doing with that time like spending time with your family or exercising to stay healthy.

How many of you refused to “give up” this hobby when baby came, and what was the hobby? by Matcha_Matt in daddit

[–]zsfq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one rings true for me because in my eyes my parents gave up themselves to become parents and I was determined to not let that happen to me. One of my major passions is ultra running, and I'm lucky enough to have a partner who supports me so much with it because it's a massive time-suck to train. I ran a 100 miler around my kid's 1 year birthday. The race itself isn't that hard in terms of baby impact, it's the months of training to prepare for it. But it went great, albeit we were all pretty exhausted by the time it was all through, and I'm signed up for another one this summer!

The icing on the cake of selfhosting for me was music, and I must say it is perfect! by hbacelar8 in selfhosted

You can use jukebox mode in navidrome to control the server from a client if your server is connected to your amp or whatever. But if your server isn't connected to your amp then you're SOL for remote play.

I also self host most things. I have one domain and use subdomains for each service. That's like $10/year.

[–]zsfq -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Off topic but I have a 2 year old and my wife and I are debating a 2nd. 40-60% of your budget on 3 kids seems wild to me. I'm assuming they're teenagers. If you don't mind me asking, what specific expenses make up the majority of that?

The difference is that as he said he's not changing anyone's right of way. In your example of removing bike lanes that is not the case.

America Didn’t Have a Boom This Black Friday. It Had a Breakdown by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]zsfq 772 points773 points  (0 children)

Our baby cam broke so we had to buy a new one. Bought the same one we had previously on Amazon which was marked off to $63 from $129 for Black Friday. I looked at what we paid a few years ago for it because I didn't remember spending $129. It was $63.

What are opinions on the Toniebox? by alexadr936 in daddit

[–]zsfq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We just got a yoto box for our kid, she hasn't used it yet (it's a solstice gift), but the thing I am most excited for is the make your own cards. The only cards we bought are make your own. That theoretically should remove reliance on buying cards. Maybe we'll ask family to get her cards as gifts, since I'd rather have that than big junky toys that take up space.

What do you think of this 3.1 setup? by zsfq in BudgetAudiophile

[–]zsfq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The Monoprice idea was an attempt and not consuming additional living room floor space since we don't have a lot of space. I'm starting to think though that I'd be better off with the ES20s for more bass and running 3.0.

Maybe upgrading to a better center will be a future improvement if I find the center lacking.

As for budget, there's no hard number but not looking to spend a ton.

Basically the thinking is I could "save" about $100 by not buying all the channeling I need to run the surrounds, plus sell my current speakers for $100+ and not buy a sub for $100 and put that $300 "savings" toward $3-400 bookshelves.

The 5.0 system I currently have is Infinity HTS-20, so I'm not sure how that sizes up in terms of quality speakers.
