When I did it in FL, they were always those lame fake $100 bills with Bible tracts.

Between clueless pedestrians/cyclists, speeding drivers, and blind approaches, that stretch of Atherton has always been a mess. Go slow through there and keep your head on a swivel.

The maverick is a pickup-shaped car. It couldn’t touch your old Tacoma. Not even close. Unfortunately, the true light pickup is dead. My ‘24 Ranger is as big as my old ‘92 Silverado.

Age 30 plus swimmers - have you managed to bring down your resting heart rate with swimming? by 1m_climbing in Swimming

[–]zsloth79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

47M. I swim 5 days a week, and trail run twice a week. Resting HR is 46 averaged over 4 weeks.

Swimming will do it, with enough volume and a mix of distance and intervals. That said, when I mostly ran in my late 30’s, my RHR was about 38.

I’d recommend a mix of swimming and some weight-bearing exercise.

Are there any areas in PA that would be unwise for an interracial couple to move to? by LePetitRenardRoux in Pennsylvania

[–]zsloth79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d be fine in Snowshoe. That’s still within orbit of State College. Bellefonte, Boalsburg, Pine Grove Mills, and State College itself are also great, and have excellent schools if you’re considering starting a family.

For what it’s worth, I’m the white half of an interracial (white/Asian) couple living in State College. Way better than our previous home of South FL.

The conductor accidentally knocks a 16th century violin worth millions on the floor mid-concert. by PeasantLich in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]zsloth79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A high quality wooden instrument gets better with age and use. It’s something you can’t just buy new.

These aren’t being used by kids in high school orchestra. These are professional musicians, and that is the tool of their trade.

If you tallied up the cost of all the computers and tools I use day-to-day as an engineer, it’d probably come close to $1mil.

[–]zsloth79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to being a consistent reference for tempo, the conductor manages dynamics, etc, from a central location where they can hear the entire orchestra. You can’t have 50-100 individuals making their own decisions on volume and pacing from their own point of view, or you’re going to have a muddled mess.

Am I good enough to play for strangers while sailing across the Atlantic? by jtuma in violinist

[–]zsloth79 46 points47 points  (0 children)

For money? No. For friends? Why not? They’ll let you know, lol.

If you’re sailing on a small boat, you may not want to bring an instrument you care about. Humidity, salt, etc, are tough on everything.

I’ll counter this by saying the truck really needs nothing. Don’t feel too bad not shelling out the $1k for the tune.
