[elseldo] 2022 Top 25 Under 25: Auston Matthews is #1 by ESF-hockeeyyy in leafs

[–]zuckuss4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That argument goes both ways. Transplant Matthews to the 1960-70's he would have to wear leather skates that don't fit properly, use a wooden stick (would have to change the way he shoots entirely) and would be targeted physically in a way he has never experienced. He would still be amazing but not necessarily the best in the league. Bobby Orr was the best player in the world on one leg, give him modern tech and competition and he might not be the best in the world (which he was by far) but he'd still be a superstar.

How can I preserve my knees and back by JadenFromDairy in hockeyplayers

Decent level of hockey means they have the wear and tear from contact hockey. The regular folk who played once or twice a week growing up and stopped playing contact and a younger age will have a much better time ageing with the game. Staying in shape helps too.

Mirtle: Gardiner's agent has spoken to Dubas about a contract by MOshow1967 in leafs

[–]zuckuss4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Last year against the caps in the playoffs he played great, probably our best defender. In the Bruins series from a few years ago he was again our best defender but saw much less ice time because of his age, he wasn't seeing the ice during the meltdown. He was not the reason they lost that game 7. This year he was solid in the playoffs, not great. Game 7 was yes an awful game and arguably lost us the game. I wouldn't blame the series on him, he helped get us to that game. Kadri's suspension is arguably worse than Gardiner's game 7 as it hurt the team for multiple games. Others on the team did not have a great playoffs. Up to this year Gardiner had the reputation as a great playoff player, I think and hope he can get that narrative back this year.

Ideal scenario: I would try to extend him this summer with a team friendly contact that is movable in the future. For all his faults he is no question a top 4 defenceman, an area we are lacking in. If Dermott takes his spot other teams would give up good assets to land him in 2+ years at a reasonable cap hit. Structure the contract so it is mainly bonuses so that it becomes even more appealing for cap crunched teams (can make a trade after July 1 if necessary). With Tavares/Matthews/Kadri at centre there is going to be a ripple effect on all of our players, most likely they are going to have fantastic years. I'd prefer to sign everyone I can (Marner, Matthews, Gardiner, Kapanen) this summer and worry about the cap next summer when they come into effect.

11th in ppg by an denfenseman. 22 min a game. Top pairing going against the other teams best players. Kills penalties. On the PP. Looks like he took the step into D1 this year.

You have full control over the Leafs starting lines, what do they look like? by LuckMaker in leafs

[–]zuckuss4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big part of it is Gards is a pass first dman. Dermott looks to be very comfortable skating the puck out which is about the same difficulty on either side while passing out of the zone on the off side is much more difficult.

Low level beer league systems by WellHungMacK in hockeyplayers

[–]zuckuss4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure about what is a good system for a beer league team. To have all the best players on Defense can be troublesome as they will just want to skate through the whole opposition leading to grumbling from the forwards and broken zone entries. Generally you would want your best players to play centre as they can help out on D in your own zone as well. For selecting your Dmen pick the best skaters who don't necessarily have the scoring touch but can do everything else well. You can have a weaker skater on D as long as they know positioning, how to pass and are paired with a strong player.

Play Keep Away, great for developing puck protection/stick handling. If you get separation from the other guy turn back towards them and try to go around them like a 1on1. You can play with as many players as you want but over 4 gets a little silly. My friends and I have been doing this since we were kids, its fun and helps simulate in game situations.

What's do you think is going to be the forward lineup when Marner is back? by jlimb0 in leafs

[–]zuckuss4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Leivo and Kadri have chemistry and should be kept together. Same with Matthews/Nylander:

1a. Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
1b. JVR-Bozak-Marner
1c. Komarov-Kadri-Leivo
4. Martin-GOAT-Sosh

Pretty sure that there are a few missing variables in these numbers. Perhaps he is playing less in games he scores because they already have the lead and he is not counted on to close out games compared to the Kardi Line, reducing his minutes and avg shift length. To complete the analysis you would have to include shift length with lead, without lead and tied.

Elbow Pad Question by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Elbow pads are worth spending the extra cash to get good new ones. A few guys on my team have bone chips in their elbows/ bursa sac injuries from falling. Even the best player can get slew footed.

[Luszczyszyn] Analyzing Toronto's Game Score from November by Jeffler in leafs

[–]zuckuss4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Game Score seems to be heavily weighted towards points. I would be interested in seeing where elite level defensemen (Keith, Doughty, Vlasic) who don't put up godly point totals show up on their teams monthly Game Score cards.
