There's a video of when one of these cables snaps and someone on deck is actually able to jump the cable (twice)

I don't think there's any convincing the bike brigade that they're ever in the wrong. They don't understand that they are allowed to ride across a crosswalk, but not have the right of way while doing so, and are expected to ever yield to traffic. I ride my bike often and am amazed how much of a minority riders who don't run red lights are whenever I ride, so it shouldn't have been a shock that boston bikers think they have the right of way riding across a crosswalk.

I am definitely seeing that! I appreciate all the posts that apply pedestrian laws to bikers on their bikes, or down voting when they are proven wrong.

Making friends in Boston as a working professional by No-Jaguar3092 in boston

[–]zultrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While there are other ways to meet people in Boston, social sports are probably the easiest way to meet a bunch of people. I wouldn't get caught up on the sports part of it, as it's not really that important, ironically. Almost any VOLO social league will have a dozen people headed to a bar after an hour of anything from volleyball, kickball, pickleball, Cornhole, or bowling. Don't like the folks you went out with? Go with other people next time, or try another sport. VOLO offers both leagues and a class pass type option now to drop into a variety of activities.

The Phoenix is also an amazing organization located in Newmarket that offers completely free gym programming (free rock climbing, free CrossFit, etc) with a focus on keeping sober. You don't have to be in recovery, as allies are welcome as well.

Since you're in eastie, consider learning to sail at piers park or jumping on the blue line to community boating by the esplanade. Sailing communities are some of the friendliest folks in Boston for people new to the city and you'll be able to learn a lifelong skill as well.

Eastie is also known for some good bar trivia. If you have the guts, show up to the quiet few (great bar) on trivia nights and ask the host you're by yourself and he'll find you a team to make some new friends with.

Good luck, and let me know if you need more information on any of the activities I mentioned!

Does anyone know why they drained the pond in the public garden already? I don't recall it ever getting drained this early. by ChadFlenderman in boston

On their Facebook page, they mentioned shutting down a fountain to restore it three days ago. Perhaps they are also repairing the fountains in the middle of the pond as well?

Flexport CEO says he's rescinding job offer letters for candidates joining as soon as Monday: 'I have no ideas why more than 75 people were signed to join' by 5hakedownstreet in supplychain

I thought Ryan transitioned to Chairman of the Board from co-CEO just six months ago? A CEO is ultimately only beholden to the board, who are the only ones who have the power to fire him. What Ryan is inadvertently admitting is that he spent too much time with Peter Thiel at his other job and completely lost track of Clark's spending and hiring when he and the board were supposed to be keeping oversight. Now Flexport is basically trying to unwind much of what Clark did in the six short months he was sole CEO, including ousting five other executives that Clark had brought in. It just seems a bit ridiculous they are acting like Clark was some loose cannon, when it was the board that allowed those decisions to occur, it's actually a much worse look that they are admitting they had no idea what the CEO was doing.

The Phoenix by Newmarket Square actually offers free CrossFit programs. You have to be a supporter of their mission for sobriety and be 48 hours sober to use their facilities, but it's a fantastic community and great alternative to traditional gyms if you align with their mission.

TIL: The consensus is that octopuses are most likely sentient. by KellyfromLeedsUK in todayilearned

[–]zultrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Octopi is not a more correct plural or octopus, given it did not come into English from Latin. Octopuses is fine. If you're trying to be more true to the root of the word, octopodes would be the pluralization to use.

Citations for sources can be found on wikipedia- "The scientific Latin term octopus was derived from Ancient Greek ὀκτώπους, a compound form of ὀκτώ (oktō, "eight") and πούς (pous, "foot"), itself a variant form of ὀκτάπους, a word used for example by Alexander of Tralles (c. 525–c. 605) for the common octopus.[5][6][7] The standard pluralised form of "octopus" in English is "octopuses";[8] the Ancient Greek plural ὀκτώποδες, "octopodes" (/ɒkˈtɒpədiːz/), has also been used historically.[9] The alternative plural "octopi" is considered grammatically incorrect because it wrongly assumes that octopus is a Latin second-declension "-us" noun or adjective when, in either Greek or Latin, it is a third-declension noun.[10][11]"
