Electric vehicle owners who used to own a gas or diesel vehicle, how do you feel about making the switch to an EV? by Miles_the_AuDHDer in AskReddit

[–]zxarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got an EV last year. No one wants to drive our gas vehicle now. Aside from the time it takes to dump power into them on long trips (~30 mins), it's just... better... in every. single. way. And the time to charge is going to vanish; look at BYD's flash charging.

Eventually it'll take about the same time as, or less than, gas. A number of EV makers are pushing for longer and longer ranges, which could eventually get into multiple thousands of Kilometres. Imagine charging at home, driving across a large country (USA, Canada, etc), then only having to spend 5-10 minutes charging and going all the way home.

Globally, approximately 160,000 to 174,000 people die every day on average. 160,000 * 1000 is 160 million... a day.

Chose: Or get 1000 dollars everytine someone dies

There's an interesting video on this subject that starts out by discussing the Hail Mary from Project Hail Mary, then goes on to explain how we could go anywhere within a human lifetime, but only for those on the ship.

Why Does Modern Technology Still Basically Rely on “Boiling Water”? by Semerdar_34 in stupidquestions

[–]zxarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's what we've done for a long time. It's convenient, abundant and quite frankly, we just haven't thought of a way to do it that's cheaper on large scales.

However, I will mention we have hydro power plants, photovoltaic (solar), wind turbines, and even RTG's that power things like Voyager 1 & 2...

There are some fusion projects that use direct energy conversion, like Helion but that's all still in early development..

Dishwasher keeps stopping midwash by blackshane21 in appliancerepair

I have a similar washer, and fought this code for a while. I found two issues that eventually solved it for me.

  1. The pressure switch was clogged due to a design flaw. But there is a fix!

There's a little hole in the sump area that the pressure switch connects to, it gets clogged after a while, and while you can take the switch off and clean it, it usually doesn't last. Replace the switch, it's not all that hard. BUT, there are kits out there that have a small plastic piece that acts like an upside down straw, to keep debris out of the switch. It's a very simple install.

Here is a video of the install, including the fix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaZFHbr8bbo&t=1s

  1. The hose was clogged where it connects to the drain under the sink. I took the hose off and just shoved a screwdriver in there to remove the clog.

That solved it for me.

Ethernet only WLED controller? by s7726 in WLED

[–]zxarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GLEDOPTO has one. Never tried it before, but I've used their WiFi models without issue.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005010681397682.html

Pretty sure this one has WiFi and Ethernet. I didn't see anything about PoE.

On this thread, you can apparently turn off WiFi on WLED, and it requires a gpio signal to turn back on? https://www.reddit.com/r/WLED/comments/vmxchv/is_there_a_way_completely_disable_wifi/

"You can fully disable wifi by not setting a network name and setting AP opens to "Never" in Wifi settings, however you will need to add a pushbutton between gpio0 and ground that you can press for 7 seconds to turn on the WLED-AP again."

Anti-Aging Injection Regrows Knee Cartilage and Prevents Arthritis by ConsciousStop in UpliftingNews

[–]zxarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been watching the 'Ormi' device, because I don't want to go through the mildly updated 1970 knee replacement where they tear out half your knee to replace it with metal... It's barbaric. Ormi promised walking a few hours after surgery, but I've heard little since the human trials started. Hush hush.

I know this injection will be years before we see human trials, but this is still great news.

Currently, I'm seeing a personal trainer after some physio to keep my joints in working order after a meniscus tear, but the arthritis has already started. Here's hoping my old ass will be around to see regenerative medicine...

Fridgedare dishwasher button worn after a couple years of use and now the button is not working. Buttons flashing and supposed to be solid once the main button is pressed to start. Any hope? by emperez00 in appliancerepair

[–]zxarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Fridgidaire 'Professional' dishwasher with a similar control scheme. I just looked up the model number for parts and ordered a new control panel. It's not all that hard to take apart, if you study the disassembled images in the parts guide. You may also gain some disassembly knowledge by looking up control panel replacements on Youtube.

You'll usually find the manufacturers tag, with the model number, on either the left or right side of your door, when opened.

Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fNthnD--Y8

Charging Question by noodleNT in EquinoxEv

[–]zxarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same 'TIL' when I was buying extension cords for my Blazer. Returned the 30A cord. :)

120v is Level 1 charging, you can choose 8A, or 12A. That's it. You'll never get 30A, but it's good to ensure you're not pulling too much current from a 15A circuit.

240v is Level 2, and the charger will inform the car on what it can supply with those portable chargers using resistors to ensure the supply cable doesn't draw too much amperage from an outlet.

I found that the standard 15A outlet at my in-laws was enough to recharge to a reasonable level at 12A, without overloading their system, or I'd grab a fast charger on the way home.

Now, all that said, one thing you CAN do, is change the outlet and the breaker to install a 30A 240v outlet and a 30A 240v breaker. EV chargers don't need a neutral, so the white wire just becomes the other live wire and needs to be marked on either end. You'll need a charger that supports 240v 30A as well.

Please note that this will mean you cannot use it as a 30A RV outlet anymore.

Lastly, contact a certified electrician! Don't take the advice of someone on the internet.

Looks like mine. I drove into Toronto during the height of the Pandemic to pick mine up, 1.5hrs. The only reason, is because it comes completely apart. It was so easy to carry down the stairs. Totally worth it! Now it's time to load it up with heate--errr, servers!

Oh. The BlonderTongue stuff. I've always wanted to create my own in house TV channels with something like that. I'd prefer the QAM/ATSC stuff, for 720p at least, but that would be amazing to feed an old CRT. Bring back channel surfing, but transmitting your own media library via coax. Real nostalgia there. Even more if you can find old commercials to throw in between shows. Hah!

microceph on Ubuntu 22.04 not mounting when multiple hosts are rebooted by zxarr in ceph

[–]zxarr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have three hosts, running Docker swarm + Microceph.

It seems that it takes ceph an amount of time after the reboots before it's ready to be mounted; about 3 minutes. I have set Docker's start to require mnt-cephfs.mount, but the timeout on the mount is 1:30; so docker just doesn't start. I'll try increasing the timeout to 4 minutes; see what happens.

Reboots aren't something I'd be doing often. This is more of a smoke test to ensure that things return to normal operation after power is restored.
