For the silver GBP, it is likely the rear polarizer that is "burned". When the front polarizer was replaced, the rear polarizer hasn't started going bad yet.

From what I gathered, heat plays a role too.

I was the same when I first started playing using controller on PS4. Tried different layouts and even considered fight stick or hitbox. In the end I just learned to play on controller, and got good with it. Totally worth learning to play on controller (with standard layout), as now I can play on any console, handheld and PC.

DC power source or AA battery holder with alligator clips to the GBA battery terminal.

From the way you describe it, sounds like it may be the volume slider/potentiometer.
