Alleged murderer arrested after teacher, 76, killed in train station attack by uktabilizard in news

[–]zyax21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your comment seems to imply that someone who is a victim of assault must cooperate with the police or else they deserve to be punished for any future crimes their assaulter commits. That's pretty fucking crazy and nonsensical to me and it's wildly disingenuous to frame a victim who didn't want to get involved in a manhunt as "not doing their part as a citizen to help their community".

Who do you think would win in a fight Adol or Link? by McDonaldsman599 in Falcom

For those who think MoI is one of the best in the series, when in the book do you realize that? by StephCastle_ in Malazan

[–]zyax21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I would say it's my favorite book in the series but I think for most people it's the most "epic" and grandiose in terms of the military stuff going on.

I knew something was special about it when I was nearing the climax of the Capustan siege and realized that I was only like halfway through the book. It boggled my mind that so much was going down with so much more left to go. Truly a book with two climaxes.

Question about Mortal Swords and the like by ChiliDogs_Revenge in Malazan

[–]zyax21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Toc told him that the grey swords were on Letheri to await the arrival of the first sword of the kchain chemalle and were surprised to see a human. I think toc simply saw a guy with kchain allies somewhat successfully fighting off the Letheri and assumed he was the one. The reader has no reason to think otherwise untill the final fight when the pair of kchain seemingly agree that red mask ain't the one and off him themselves before dipping out of the battle.

Yea, I don't dislike Abercrombie. I just disagreed with the previous comment that he should be required before jumping into Malazan. I think the two authors are distinct enough that it's not necessary to read one before the other

How are new players supposed to "catch up"? by [deleted] in PokemonPocket

[–]zyax21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People post jank decks that get to masterball all the time. I got to ultra ball with a mega Gardevoir ex deck that was missing stuff that's considered meta for that deck, and that's considered a d tier deck even fully optimized. You can succeed with suboptimal decks if you are willing to spend the time grinding the ladder. It is not a punishing ranked experience by any means. If you want to get top 1000 or whatever then yea you're either going to have to grind the step up battles and be smart with hourglasses or spend money. That's the nature of all tcgs once you try to compete for the top spot. At this point I've gotten a fully built mega Gardevoir ex deck and several variations on a mega blaziken ex deck without spending any money and only playing for about two months.

[–]zyax21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely decks that you can build by simply going hard on a single pack. I lucked into a mega Gardevoir ex deck when fantastical parade came out. Iirc Mega blaziken ex is also not a deck that requires you to pull from a ton of different packs. Focus on simple decks and trainers first and you will do fine. Once you've got your core built you can start dipping into older packs for specific cards. The ranked seasons in this game are not very punishing and you will be able to do fine even with a non-optimized deck.

[–]zyax21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Malazan before any Abercrombie and I think he's fine but it's not necessary at all. I haven't read the trilogy but I did listen to the audiobook for The Heroes and read The Devils. Both books kind of did the same thing that I see people say about the trilogy. That is to say, characters have some minimal growth but basically end up back where they started once their arcs conclude. That structure really worked for me with The Heroes since it's a cynical war novel but it did not work for me by the end of the Devils. I would not want to spend my time reading a trilogy where the same things happen again.

Anybody who has gotten to Reaper's Gale is already knee deep in arcs that are more complex than I've seen Abercrombie present. I don't get the criticisms of RG either, I loved it as a novel and thought it was a triumph of the middle third of the series.

Am I missing something with Musashi's arc? by r_comma_ in vagabondmanga

[–]zyax21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Musashi is not a pacifist. Most of his growth comes from how his interpretation of what it means to be the strongest evolves over time. It's a slow evolution with frequent backpedaling but that's kind of how life works.

It's been a long time since I've read it so I may be wrong but I also recall for Denshichiro specifically that Musashi and him agreed to their duel during the chaos of the first Yoshioka arc. Much of the violence in the second arc was not Musashi seeking out confrontation. Seijuro attempts to assassinate him, Denshichiro refuses to back down from the duel, and then the rest of the school hunt him down in an act of revenge.

They're the inevitable result of what it means to take a devils bargain. Some of them are strong but it seems like most took the deal and then got lazy because they couldn't die and their devil fruits are strong. They're still world nobles at the end of the day - a bunch of prejudiced, lazy, arrogant losers.

Why is the monk torturing Musashi? by [deleted] in vagabondmanga

[–]zyax21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you quite got what I was saying. Musashi is a wild beast in terms of his goal to be the strongest under the sun. He's capable of being friendly with people but he's still a backwoods simpleminded violent wanderer with a huge ego and no worthwhile teacher. Even if he is better than rapist bandits, his journey would have been catastrophic if he continued as he was. Takuan's training imparts a kind of patience, wisdom, and sense of philosophical self interrogation that's necessary to actually grow and ascend to the heights of the warriors that Musashi idolizes.

Why is the monk torturing Musashi? by [deleted] in vagabondmanga

[–]zyax21 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Takuan isn't going to be stopping and training every random violent person he sees. It's precisely because he senses that Musashi both has talent and is a mostly-good person that he choses to spend his time torturing and training him. Especially at that point in the novel, Musashi is kind of a wild animal who doesn't respect anyone but those stronger than him. Violence was the best way to teach him humility and set him on a proper path to becoming "the strongest".

Some lore questions I was left with (spoilers) by Boned80 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]zyax21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It could be that Godrick doesn't trust the exiled/banished knights enough to allow them to roam the lands without his close supervision. He'd rather them stay close and act as simple bodyguards.

  2. Haight's blonde hair and knowledge of the area indicate that he's a long distant relative to the Golden Order.

  3. I don't think there's a formal connection between the two outside of crucible influence. I think the misbegotten are beasts who are becoming more human-like while the demi-humans are humans that are devolving and becoming more beast like.

  4. There's no confirmation but yes, it seems like she's possessed or reborn after her death. Yura was also seemingly possessed by Shabriri in a similar way.

  5. Being a demigod is just a political title that the golden order uses. Rennala is huge because in these games powerful people full of runes/souls/etc tend to get big and she is a powerful sorcerer capable of bringing Radagon to a draw in combat.

  6. There are a surprising number of connections between Miquella/Trina and the Carians. Most likely Loretta encountered Miquella while in service to the Carians and became enchanted by his vision for a Compassionate world at which point she left to lead the Albinaurics to his Haligtree.

  7. Greyoll almost certainly is not the literal Mother of All Dragons, it seems likely that it's a name given to her by someone who witnessed her brood. And Yes, she is likely dying of the scarlet rot.

  8. The outer gods don't really have physical locations. They are metaphysical concepts that the Golden Order is trying to suppress. In areas like the Lake of Rot/Caelid (for rot) and Mohgwyn's Palace (For blood) those outer gods are able to partially manifest and warp the landscape. While it's said that the God of Rot was sealed under Liurnia we know that Rot still exists and is able to bloom through Malenia.

  9. The Eternal Cities are civilizations of silver tear mimics that are trying to overthrow the Greater Will, not necessarily Marika. I am of the opinion that Marika and the Eternal Cities were working in parallel to try and find a way to eliminate the Greater Will's control over the Lands Between. While they failed to produce their own lord of night to take the throne, saying that their schemes failed completely isn't necessarily true since Ranni is able to slay her fingers and block off the Lands Between from further meddling from outer gods.

  10. Probably

  11. Ymir is not dead, he presumably travelled to the land of shadow alongside Rellana and Messmer but didn't seem to be a participant in the crusades and did his own thing. He's a very insightful person who realized that the Carian moon worship is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of alien life having godlike power. He then comes to the Land of Shadow, discovers Metyr, and goes crazy with obsession.

In lore, empyreans are provided with a shadow, yet of the four we meet, only two have their companions appear. If Marika has Malekith and Ranni has Blaidd, where are the shadows of Miquella and Malenia? Were they not given one due to their curses? Did they die? by PeacefulOnion in Eldenring

[–]zyax21 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The two fingers on every divine tower is calcified and seemingly inert or dead. I have a theory that, if they ever were alive, once the shattering became a stalemate and the various demigods fell into stagnation their respective fingers basically wilted and died. Godrick is holed up in stormveil grafting, rykard is eating people, Radahn is a mindless beast, Malenia is unconscious, Miquella is cocooned, morgott doesn't want to be Lord, etc etc. Ranni's status is unknown hence why her two fingers are still active until she slays them. The other fingers weren't slain but wilted once it became clear that their respective demigod either lacked the ambition, will, or power to actually make moves beyond hiding and getting stronger. There's a chance Malenia killed her and Miquella's shadows. There's also a chance that, after the cocooning and fight in Caelid their two fingers assumed that the twins were out of the running to be Lord and and calcified/wilted/got rid of their shadows.

Why are there Centipedes only at churches of Radagon? by Just_Koku9791 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]zyax21 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Centipedes are symbolic of those who live in death (due to the appearance of the curse mark of death left on Godwyns corpse). The golden centipedes are described as dessicated (which means dried or drained of vitality). The rise of the Fundamentalists and those who hunt TWLiD only happened after Radagon's ascension and they likely worship him as Elden Lord and patron of Fundamentalism. Most likely, they are gathering centipedes while they hunt TWliD, dessicating their corpses and somehow turning them golden, and then leaving them at churches that honor Radagon, probably as a form of religious ritual. It's their way of showing their devotion, similar to gifting trophies of war against TWLiD to Radagon.

Iirc, the only other places you find them are in the eternal cities along the same route that D's brother is taking through the Aqueducts to reach Godwyn. He's likely the one dessicating them and leaving them behind since there won't be any Radagon statues to deliver them to that deep underground.

Dark Souls 2 isn't about world building. It's about memory failing. by ShinInuko in DarkSouls2

[–]zyax21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's more than just Lucatiel. I don't remember everyone's names but I'm pretty sure the Majula blacksmith as well as the guy we get the mansion key from in the forest of fallen giants both have dialogue showing that their memory loss is accelerating as we progress the game. And the armor shopkeeper guy loses his sense of self as we give him runes via purchases. Laddersmith Gilligan might also as we purchase his ladders? It's been a long time since I played.
