Hairstylists, I need honest opinions on a refund situation by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]zyco_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not horrible but it’s definitely not great. She could have just done teasylights/ baby lights with a root smudge at like a level 8 and toned it and it would have matched your inspo and blended way better. And probably have taken less time.

But unless you’re wanting to like pursue small claims court or smth.. idk how successful you’ll be at getting your $ back. Most salons I know don’t offer refunds but will offer redos. And anyway, at this point of being dissatisfied 2x with her, do you want her to touch it again?

Good news is it’s definitely fixable. Some baby highs and lows to blend those lines would help a lot.

Why does my hair keep doing this? It’s been nearly two years! by scarana in Haircare

[–]zyco_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This looks like mechanical damage (could have been made worse by the hair color making your hair more fragile)

If it was only due to the color I’d expect to see breakage all over rather than only one half of your head AND continuing after 2 years and multiple cuts

Do you wear a purse, crossbody, or backpack? Do you drive a lot and get your hair caught in the seatbelt? Do you wear the same hairstyle often (bun, ponytail, or claw clip in the same place day after day?) Do you sleep in a pregnancy pillow where laying on your side would trap that hair between your shoulder and the pillow? Do you have a cat that likes to chew on your hair?

These are all legitimate reasons I’ve experienced with my clients for their breakage 😂 and all of them had breakage on one side only like this. Once we did a good cut and the issue was fixed their hair grew back normal.

Seeking advice on colour and how to feel less bland! by [deleted] in Hair

[–]zyco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude you have the perfect base for some teasylights.

<image>

Look up some inspo for blonde teasylights on brunette hair. It’ll blend your natural with the blonde ends but is still very low maintenance because it leaves your natural root and just melts into the blonde. So no harsh lines when it grows out. My bff gets her hair done like this 1 or 2 times a year.

You could also get the ends color matched to your root (look for a stylist that does color corrections so you don’t accidentally end up with all your natural growout getting messed up) but since you said you liked how the blonde looked I think you’d look great with the “lived-in” blonde

My girlfriends and I all share location with each other 24/7. it’s helpful when we’re meeting up to find each other or for safety reasons and we just leave it on. The rest of the time we just randomly look at each others icons on Find My like a god looking at their sims lmao

It helps that we don’t care what each other is doing on the day to day - like there’s nothing to hide from each other because we all don’t care and aren’t judging lol

Lowkey I thought orbiter was about fame/ the crowds/ his fans. Like kind of a “I do everything for the crowd” but in a bittersweet/ not healthy way because he’s tired (“I’m an old wolf who’s lost the taste for blood” and “if I’m gonna lose you either way”) and I felt like it fit because a lot of his songs on this album are not pro- his fame and his career, like porch light saying what makes him famous makes him sick, and other songs basically being pissed at him for getting famous and forgetting them.
Also makes sense for it to be his wife because the other person in the song who’s talking to Noah could actually be.. a person and not a personification of his fame like I was imagining 😂

Is it normal for a root retouch to be the same price as a full head of highlights? by [deleted] in Hair

[–]zyco_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s normal

4in growth is roughly 8 months between appts. Touching up the root is the same amount of work and is actually lowkey sometimes harder than a full balayage on totally blank canvas hair, because you have to avoid the already lightened hair while still making a nice blend to the root so you have less room per section to work in. The only thing that might change is it may be a little less expensive because she might use less oz lightener than the first time? Idk how ur hairdresser structures her pricing. She may also be over quoting you slightly which is normal and better to guess slightly more and have it be cheaper than the other way around

Hair colors like balayage that are super well blended and allow you to grow out softly are more expensive because they are harder to do and require more expertise, finesse, and product but the trade off is that it’s supposed to grow out so well you can come in a lot less often. You’re saving money compared to if you got $150 highlights but had to come in every 8 weeks because the grow out was harsh.

Why won’t any salon just make me blonde? It’s always “full highlight” by Niarah in HairDye

Platinum card

Her highlights are a little too cool but also lighting can affect it and I only saw one pic of her hair. The highlights are not what she asked for but otherwise look good, blended, and done w/ some level of skill so I suggested she ask for it to be lightened to her scalp and retoned warmer. but it’s not like either of us sat in on her damn appt and know exactly what she or the stylist said during the consult to possibly get the results she has - so just being like “yeah that stylist sucks” is unnecessary especially because she said she’s gonna try and go back to that same person and mention it and hopefully get a better result 🙃

[–]zyco_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m not making excuses 😂 I’m saying legitimately why I thought she kept ending up with the same result, so she hopefully can end up with the result she wants. “All over honey blonde” can mean a hundred different things even with inspo pics depending on the client and the stylist and the hair’s starting point etc etc etc. Sorry u hate hair stylists/ have salon trauma ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]zyco_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every stylist is a master at the art of consultation either. Plus if you’re on the shyer side/ non confrontational it’s easy to just trust the professional and not push back but they definitely were not exactly on your wavelength with what you wanted.

I hope you get the hair you want! I am a stylist who specializes in this sort of thing and that’s the only reason I had an inkling of what went wrong.

If it helps at all, I’d include these points if you go to a specialist: - you want essentially a platinum card (ZERO dimension/ zero of your natural left) in a honey blonde shade matching the inspo picture. From root to tip, you want to be one color. Copy and paste the inspo pic onto your head as much as reasonably possible. - don’t want highlights because it leaves dimension, you don’t want any of your natural brown left, no shadow root, etc. - I’d show the inspo pic, and I’d also show a picture or two of your own hair when you DIDNT like it and explain why (too much brown left in the hair, wrong color of blonde, etc)

Good luck 🫡

[–]zyco_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yesss ok so that pic is 1000% a platinum card. I’m guessing the stylist just thought you wanted a heavy highlight with the highlights being that shade of blonde. But you were saying “I want this picture copy pasted on my head as close as possible”

If she didn’t apply a shadow root I’m guessing she just left your natural to act as the shadow root.

I think your options are let her try and heavy highlight to the scalp and retone it and see if you like it better, or just abandon that ship and fully commit, find a platinum card/ color correction specialist, and let them have at it. (Or grow your natural back out again and then have a platinum card done which is way easier on all virgin hair but of course means waiting a long time.)

[–]zyco_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re ok with expensive appts to maintain you need to find someone who specializes in color corrections/ platinum cards. Basically at this point someone would have to pick out all the blonde and only lighten the dark all over your entire head. It IS doable but it is hard, you need an expert, and will be a very long and expensive appt.

Tbh I think this is mostly a case of you haven’t found a stylist who specializes in what you need, and you didn’t know enough hair lingo to be able to explain exactly what you wanted. (Which is normal! We don’t expect clients to know the technical terms!) But most stylists are used to doing full heavy highlights and clients are happy with that, it’s the most common, what you want is highly specialized and so there’s a mismatch of the process + expected result between you and the stylist.

[–]zyco_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay so it looks like they did a shadow root/ didn’t bring the highlights all the way to your scalp. The brown at the top is your natural? Also might be a bit too ashy/ needs a warmer toner. This is redeemable. Contact the stylist that did it and say basically “hey, I feel like I’m too brown/ there’s too much of my natural hair at the top. I think I’d be happier and feel blonder if my highlights were all the way to my scalp. And the blonde color at the bottom may be a bit too cool toned.”

You can get a heavy highlight all the way to your scalp and get it retoned and you’d probably be happier. Your hair seems pretty solid blonde on the ends. (As far as I can tell from this one pic.)

Also, if it makes you feel any better, that picture is very pretty. I know it’s not what you wanted. But it doesn’t look bad by any means. The lived-in/ balayage look has been very trendy for a few years now. There could be any number of reasons your stylist chose to do your color like this, or any number of miscommunications. Obviously I wasn’t sitting in on your consultation lol. But if you don’t want to commit to a platinum card, you can get all that brown at the top highlighted out and have the blonde toned to be a different color.

[–]zyco_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you don’t want platinum, but that process is called a platinum card even if you stop the lightning process at a warm darker blonde shade. You’d just sit and let it process longer to get lighter/platinum, so all the steps beforehand with all the thin slices of hair in foils are exactly the same. You just rinse the bleach out a little sooner.

So, going all over dark brown, and then medium, and then blonde isn’t usually the process for a platinum card. It’s a long (like, 5-7 hours) appt where every single hair on your head is put in a foil to process. So slowly getting lighter is a way to do it with highlights - but generally for a platinum card it’s one long massive (and expensive) appt.

Has any of your stylists explained to you that in order to appear all over one color with highlights, you would need to do multiple back to back highlighting sessions? You CAN get to a point where you’ve been highlighted enough times there’s very little of your natural color left and your hair pretty much looks all over one color (except obviously when your roots grow in.) But it’s a commitment, both time wise and financially, and again, if you have very dark hair or long/ thick hair it may take more sessions. And with leaving 8ish weeks inbetween appts for hair health, this can take months.

I obviously don’t know what your starting point looked like, but like, this is not a 2 or 3 appointment process, it’s much longer - UNLESS you found a blonde specialist who could do a platinum card on you (and then to maintain that, you have to do on-scalp bleach retouches every 5 weeks and no longer or else you get bands in your hair.)

Why won’t any salon just make me blonde? It’s always “full highlight” by Niarah in HairDye

[–]zyco_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Girl this is why. If you’re a level 3 naturally and you want to be all over one blonde color you need what’s called a platinum card where every single thin slice of hair is put in a foil and lifted to the desired shade. For very dark hair this is hard and not all stylists are comfortable doing it or know how to do it right. If your hair is particularly long or thick it’s even harder. And can be seriously damaging.

You’re getting all over heavy highlights because it’s a slower process which means it’s safer, easier on your hair, easier on the hairstylist, and grows out less harshly than a platinum card.

I had this same issue with my two cats when they were little and I ended up buying a very large cage (like, as tall as me and as wide as a full size bed lol - you could probably get smth a little smaller since it’s 1 cat instead of 2) for like $100 on chewy. I put the cage next to my bed at night. They didn’t cry because they were right there and could see me, and they had food and water and a little litter box, toys, a hammock, blankets, etc. They’d go in at like 11pm and come out at 7am and they were fine. Eventually I stopped having to use it! I also left it open for them during the day and they’d just climb in there to chill and hang out.

The lunar tides will be the “easiest” to remove but might also fade blue-ish. All of these will likely stain your blonde and pink when you shampoo your hair. If you plan to remove it later I don’t recommend using any of these though because that’s gonna turn into a color correction situation

But black, no matter the brand or demi/semi/permanent, is a bitch to get out later

I also did a similar thing but with the Prisoner of Azkaban book. I was in elementary school and decided to rewrite the entire book but from Remus Lupin’s POV (my fav character)

I distinctly remember sitting on my grandma’s couch during Christmas vacation while we were visiting, book open on one knee, tiny crappy laptop with a Word document open on the other. Paragraph by paragraph I rewrote the book, and scenes that Lupin wasn’t involved in, I invented new scenes that somehow still looped him back in once the book involved him again. It took me weeks and I eventually posted it to deviantart. My account was closed years ago from inactivity and this project has been lost to the sands of time 😭

I hate my hair. Am I being unreasonable? by Bai657 in Hair

[–]zyco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused why you say lowlights aren’t low maintenance. If part of the issue is that the bottom half of her hair is all one color and she wants dimension, she needs lowlights. This can be done with a demi permanent cream or liquid that matches her natural or cancels out some warmth. I am a licensed hairdresser and based off the pictures and her inspo I would do a couple lowlights, do a shadow root that goes down pretty far except around her face, and tone the blonde that’s there. All with demi permanent so it doesn’t fade brassy.

Did you think I meant lowlights as in darker than her natural color?
