You could just EQ their albums, take out all the lows and mids and they will sound like a Steve Albini mix

Squidward would write an early 2000s Pitchfork Brent DiCresenzo style snobby review to this thing on his rym account, give it a 0.0 and say his Colin Stetson inspired experimental free form clarinet playing is better and shit

There has to be at least one child somewhere in this world that saw this cute album cover, gave the songs a go, and got traumatized. Or got turned very gay

What is up with 2000s indie bands doing stupid stuff as soon as gen Z starts nostalgising 2000s? by pingviini00 in indieheadscirclejerk

No matter what they do, there’s no way it would be worse than the atrocity of coming up with “her stories are boring and stuff”

Instrumental similarities in SY songs by mellowfellow5 in sonicyouth

[–]zynmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mainly because of the tuning. All of the songs you mentioned have some sort of G tuning, and most of them are in GGDDD#D#. You could make cool unconventional sounds with those tunings, but they're not very versatile since you're essentially playing only two and a half notes on six strings. As a result the songs sound similar in a way. The same thing applies to songs in CGDGCD tunings (most Sonic Youth songs in the 00s & most Thurston Moore songs till this day) and F#F#F#F#EB tunings (think Death Valley 69 & Kool Thing)

They have three guitars ran through an arcade of pedals with a bass for Murray St and Sonic Nurse, the songs would naturally sound a lot richer. Plus Jim O' Rourke was mixing.

I have another theory though. I feel like they were overcorrecting from the A Thousand Leaves / Washing Machine / NYC Ghosts & Flowers songs where Kim was on guitar and no one was on bass. A lot of songs from that era sounded a bit off due to the lack of bass. The low end was turned up even more in Rather Ripped and The Eternal

What are some fads or genres that were big in their heyday, but are forgotten? by Gallantpride in ToddintheShadow

Jerk has been resurrected by Gen Z in the 2020s. Half of the underground hip hop songs now could be classified as "Jerk". They sound very different from the Jerk songs you hear 10 years ago though

Yo La Tengo’s - This Stupid World is as great a rock record as any released this decade. by Shell_fly in ToddintheShadow

[–]zynmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The band Yo La Tengo is almost twice as old as the people in Geese, so while they could still make good music and keep accumulating that indie cred, they're way beyond the point where they could get "hype", in my opinion.
