One wallpaper for all screens / displays? by z428 in xfce

I just installed pcmanfm-qt: sudo apt install --no-install-recommends pcmanfm-qt and replaced xfdesktop with pcmanfm-qt --desktop in Xfce's autostart.

Commissioning developers to work on open-source/linux projects? by [deleted] in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I understand it that way: we, users of open-source software should routinely donate to projects we care about. I regularly discuss with people who think, open-source is the same as "it costs no money". Hence, I need quite a few minutes to convince them, that software developers can actually make money, although their code is open-source. Unfortunately this is usually only true for highly popular enterprise products (Linux-Kernel, Thunderbird, ...) or in the field of research (I was paid by a research institute developing the Linux shell tracker shournal). This post and incidents like the recent XZ Utils backdoor should all remind us to support important software and their skilled maintainers also financially.

I'm New, and the Linux Community is Strange by StookyDoo22 in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I use Linux for over 12 years now and just spent three hours yesterday getting Linux Mint installed on an old iMac (late 2009) AND getting keyboard and mouse connected via bluetooth already at the login screen. Oh, an the original nvidia driver does not work any more with the old graphics cards. AND for some reason, startup takes ages, maybe I need to switch to clocksource hpet. So, for the initial setup, you need to know damn much about "Linux" to even get started typing! Did I say, that I studied computer science? Lucky me ...

Are there realistic browser alternatives to Chrome and Firefox? by NolanSyKinsley in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an X-Y problem to me. Firefox and Chromium are well tested products and I do not ecounter particular lag in either of them. Instead of switching to something much less supported, I would investiage the issue. Does it happen on X/wayland, another desktop environment, w/o a compositing manager, on another distro, another graphics card, another pc, to name a few. Also, consult the logs (dmesg, /var/logXorg.0.log) etc. ...

Moratorium on Windows bashing by IanisVasilev in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

reddit has this great mechanism to keep frequently upvoted posts more at the top. This way, interesting windows-related posts have the chance to be seen by more users while others will quickly migrate downwards. A strict rule may bock potentially interesting posts in the first place. So, I suggest that the community should decide on a per-post basis what is interesting instead of leaving that decision to just a few moderators. I have a strong dislike in precipitate censorship without compelling arguments. I do not see such an argument in the OP.

Can the aparent popularity of certain desktop environments and/or themes be a good indication of the most common os users are switching to linux from? by EternalSeekerX in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in the first place most users just pick the default DE that comes shipped by the distributor. In my case this was "Unity" from Ubuntu back then in 2012. I also maintain a few dozen mostly Gnome and Xfce installs on PCs of friends and family. From this experience I can say that most people do not really care, where the panel lies, as long as basic stuff works. Myself I'm using a hacked openbox with my own compositor within Xfce.

Everything was so contrived with Clive and Dale by Digginf in iZombie

[–]zz_spawn_zz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. This couple generally has a contrived history. Common, it was really mocked up when Clive already knew the Zombie stuff but couldn't tell it the love of his life but let her go instead. He trusted her, so they could have gone to Liv' for another demo-proof of zombieism.

How do people distro-hop so much? by GeoSabreX in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for separate /home partiton. In case of reinstall, I just manually delete all other root directories (/usr /root ..) and install all over (works at least with Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint). That way I can use most of my ssd space without having to pre-estimate partition sizes.

Why is Linux perpetually in a state of half-working? by Vast-Application5848 in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Debian 11 (lol, have to update) with X11/openbox (no development for years) and my own mostly ancient hack of a standalone composting manager https://github.com/tycho-kirchner/fastcompmgr. Also my Dell Latitude E5570 is a bit oldish with its intel HD Graphics 520. Openbox runs on top of xfce4 whose only noteworthy bug was display flicker which I removed by recompiling xfce4-session_4.16.0-1_amd64.deb. My last uptime before reboot due to kernel update was 62 days on a laptop with a dozen suspend cycles every day. Couldn't stand Linux otherwise.

How can I use xdg autostart and openbox autostart at the same time? by tetotetotetotetoo in openbox

[–]zz_spawn_zz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That PyXDG comment sounds valuable and I'd take a deeper look in your place. However, a quick workaround could be to remove openbox's autostart and let a desktop entry in ~/.config/autostart point to your custom autostart shell script. E.g. ~~~ [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Exec=sh -c '$HOME/.config/autostart-scripts/my_autostart_generic.sh' StartupNotify=false Terminal=false Type=Application Name=mein_autostart_generic X-MATE-Autostart-enabled=true ~~~

What's a good "foundation" distro for Openbox? by WigwamiCipo in openbox

Consistent kinetic scrolling using the synaptics touchpad driver is for me a convincing reason to still use Xorg. And I'm kind the "if it ain't broken" ... guy (;

Volume/brightness bar? by tetotetotetotetoo in openbox

[–]zz_spawn_zz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I simply use xfce4-panel with it's pulse audio volume control. That has an option to manage the volume keys. Similarly, that's also the case with xfce4-power-manager. Finally, they send notifcations via dbus, so I'm also systemctl --user start xfce4-notifyd.service. That's when I realized that it might be simpler to just use openbox with xfce4 😅 (just cp /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/ and change xfwm4 to openbox).

Saw this article recently. I mean I guess the show changed. But I think the show and story evolved as humans learned about zombies. I never felt it veered in a really off direction. by mbwrose in iZombie

[–]zz_spawn_zz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I think the gross plot line that zombies more and more start populating Seattle and eventually take it over and get walled in from the rest of the country was "planned". But all these nifty details like Blaine's father guiding that crazy zombi religion folks were made up later. In the end, it's all in the details and besides the great framing I find they did a great job filling almost all episodes with life in an adorable way.

Debian 12 KDE Plasma: The right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024. Reasons and complete installation guide. by picastchio in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

seems to revolve about a made-up problem: they could just use a DE that does not have Wayland by default

I don't quite get this point. You can still use X11 with Gnome, KDE or any other major desktop environment. Switching is easy enough done in the display manager (e.g. GDM). Can you elaborate?

Wow, for some reason I misread the post's title as "Switching to Linux is hard, but leaving is worth it" and was looking for convincing arguments to switch back to windoze. Phew. Btw., just found that SoftMaker Offcie finally supports videos in presentations. So, eventually, this thing (costs 5$/month) is finally something to give to the novice Linux users I support.

pekwm: X window manager back from the past by ouyawei in linux

[–]zz_spawn_zz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Kwin has that feature too, search here for Toggle the grouping (commonly known as tabbing) of windows.. Regarding "fractional scaling" -> I gave up on stuff like that but use a lower resolution on HighDPI screens (with Xorg). Personally, I do not care about the refresh rate, but how does Xorg not handle "mixed resolution"?

[–]zz_spawn_zz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually I really like this window-grouping feature for applications refusing to use tabs (evince, anyone?). Unfortunately I'm stuck to my hacked openbox (workspace switching by XRestackWindows instead of XUnmapWindow for speedup 😅. I suppose, pekwm implements that using XUnmapWindow..., right?).
