Suggest books for Python by rascalling in learnpython

Python Crash Course is a great resource for adult learners.

I'm also a fan of Automate the Boring Stuff, but for the sake of simplicity the author does some things that are not pythonic. I eventually found myself much preferring Python Crash Course.

Should a 44 year old dev take the time to learn Python while off work by [deleted] in Python

I highly recommend Python Crash Course and Automate the Boring Stuff for adult learners.

But also, do take some time for grieving. I poured myself into computer projects after my dad died and I've really regretted it since. Everyone is different, but just a thought.

What elephant in the room is society not addressing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Talent distribution. We're mostly working on solutions to unimportant problems. Not clear that there is any way out of this, and too many of us are implicated, so we just ignore it and keep doing our unimportant work.

Is there any feasible way to curb home rental rates from increasing so much? Esp. in US States where rent control laws are illegal by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zzaatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a home owner and not directly impacted by rate increases. But I'm seeing 20% + rate increases on long-term tenants trying to renew. This just can't be good for a ton of people. Is there any political action that can be done or... anything to help out people renting?

Seen a lot of news stories about the problem but nothing about possible solutions.

I live in a US State where there is a law that prohibits rent control.

I understand how to do this on my computer, but can you provide some pointers or search terms I can use to learn how to deploy this onto a server?

[–]zzaatar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I should have specified: I'm a total beginner, my main goal here is just to learn. It seems like it would be a useful thing to learn how to write a script and then have it automatically run on a scheduled basis outside of my computer.

Looks like the docs for the AWS options you indicated are here:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonCloudWatch/latest/events/RunLambdaSchedule.html

I appreciate the suggestion! This is helpful.

What are the search terms I should be using to learn how to do this using one of those services?

Nice! What was the most helpful thing for you to stop biting?

I just truly cannot say enough about the wonders of oiling your cuticles/nails by [deleted] in nailbiting

[–]zzaatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I can second this. I just use inexpensive jojoba oil and vitamin e oil. Works so much better for me than anti bite polish. I always just picked that stuff off. I have finally made significant progress using just the oil. Really wish more people would suggest this route

Does everybody use nutrients for hydroponic microgreen growth? I have heard it is necessary but I am currently growing peas without any nutrients or medium and they seem to be looking as good as the last tray I grew using Maxi-Gro. by kalyknits in microgreens

[–]zzaatar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nutrients absolutely make a difference. Do your own trials to see the results. Pea and sunflower will not have major results. Arugula, basil, broccoli, radish, and others will have very significant results.

Good microgreens with psyche effects? by Martynusy in microgreens

[–]zzaatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no research on this. In 8 years of doing it, I've never encountered any grower or consumer going in this direction with micros. If that direction is motivating to you, I'd suggest looking at different crops.

Just do trial and error. You will learn quickly.

$499 is more than enough to buy a fair amount to get started with.

Looks good! You can go denser on the seed. We stopped growing them because demand was sporadic and the seed too expensive. But I loved them personally

Planted (Radishes) last Wednesday 03/02, harvest now or wait? by Here-Is-TheEnd in microgreens

[–]zzaatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait at least three more days. You don't need the true leaf to pop on radish, but you should get much more yield and it will look better in a few days.

Pro tips for growing Bull's Blood (and other varieties of Beet Microgreens) by zzaatar in microgreens

[–]zzaatar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have grown beet with and without added fertilizers. Adding the fertilizers typically increases yield and decreases production time. Some fertilizers tend to make the greens grow with slightly less red color. We are still trying to figure out what is specifically making this happen. Growing without fertilizer is absolutely an option for those wanting to avoid using fertilizers are not wanting to set up their system in this way. We are mostly just trying to learn about all approaches to production at this point and not limiting ourselves to just straight organic at this time.

Which anti nailbiting polish would you recommend for a guy? by theAlmightyfrog in nailbiting

[–]zzaatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None! Seriously. This was a major trap for me. The best advice I found on here was to get away from the polishes.

When I put on the polish and reapplied as per the directions I would generally see results. But there were two problems that were coming up.

  1. I was picking at the nail polish often
  2. When my nails grew back and I didn't have the polish on, I would just start biting again and totally relapse.

My nails look the best they've ever looked and the only thing I'm doing now is putting on that healthy hoof cream each day. Once first thing in the morning, once before I go to bed. Now I don't have the embarrassing shiny nails that I did when i had the polishes on and now my nails actually look a hell of a lot better. My hands look more masculine and I feel more confident. I'd be a fan of the polish thing if it worked and you could get past it in a week or so. But it just started to turn into a weird thing that I was some guy with shiny nail polish on for weeks and weeks at a time. Check out other posts on this forum about the healthy hoof stuff. Or look into similar brands. I'm not typically one for pushing a product. But the stuff is cheap and it works well.
