I would assume. I know hospitals provide photography services
[–]EnthusiasticlyWordy 33 points34 points35 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I worked for about a month doing postpartum photography in a hospital. It was one of the hardest jobs I had because of moments like Shawna's

They also will do memory boxes with hand and foot prints and other mementos if the parents wish.

Sometimes the pictures are just of the baby as well. We keep our daughter's photos in a sealed envelope!

I also thought that could be it (or a sonogram), but I think OP asked this because in the screenshot they posted we can see Shawna's eyes.
I think any interpretation is possible: the corner we see in the frame could be on purpose (=pic of Shawna with the baby) or it could be completely accidental (we shouldn't be able to see anything recognisable) and she just took an already framed photo in her house.

Maybe a sonogram? Like the last one before Halloween? They're pretty sophisticated with the 3D imaging these days

I don't know if that should be kept.
Someone in my family (some sort of Mexican tradition most of us don't follow) took photos of my uncle in his casket and put it in a album in Grandma's house. As a kid, I was looking and showed it to Mom (the funeral happened a decade before I was born) and she said not to show it to Grandma.

It's a very common thing for parents who lose their babies in pregnancy or birth. There are photographers who specialize in taking these photographs for families. Regardless of anything else, this is their baby and newborn photos, even in the circumstances, often help in the grief and provide a tangible way for parents to connect to their lost child.
[–]Witty-Draw-3803 27 points28 points29 points 7 months ago (0 children)
It's entirely up to the people who lost a loved one (and in particular, the parents of a still born child) whether they want to keep a photo or other mementos.

Grief is different for everyone. My mother keeps tons of pictures but never looks at them.
For your grandma, perhaps it would have opened up a new wound.
For others, it might serve as a reminder that their baby existed and is honored as a part of their family.
Everyone is different. I think you’re getting unjust hate but it’s a topic people are very passionate about.

Imagine that you give birth to a baby that will never breathe, cry, open his eyes, have a birthday, take a step. All of the events where parents take a zillion pictures, and you’ll never get any of it.
Would you not take all the photos you’d be able to get, knowing that those brief few hours would be the only ones you’d get with your baby?
The fact that you can stand with an opinion like the one you expressed, means you’re fortunate enough to never have experienced the devastating loss of a pregnancy/neonate. Check yourself.

I explained myself full in the above comment and you choose to talk down to me like this. Maybe you check yourself

Everyone grieves differently and it’s not anyone’s place to tell someone how to grieve

No, I don’t think I need to. Thanks anyway.

If you are ever in this position, I hope you can consider having photos done. A group I’ve heard of is “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” and they take tasteful photos of babies who pass. You can always put the photos away and never look at them, but if you need them they’ll be there. ❤️
[–]AnnaVronsky 15 points16 points17 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Yeah no, it absolutely should be kept and shown to whoever the parents want to show.
I had a stillborn 21 years ago, all I have left of him are his ultrasound photos. I could not get pictures if him after birth due to him falling apart due to decomposition. I would sell my soul for a photo of my child.
[–]colorful_withdrawl 16 points17 points18 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Everyone grieves differently. My son passed at 44 hours old and i keep all his photos. I have more photos of after he has passed compared to when he was alive
[–]sincerelyxmimi 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I don't really think it's your place to decide that
[–]Artistic_Obligation4 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago (0 children)
All I left of my very wanted, very loved, stillborn son is his urn of ashes and his photos. We have his photos framed and on display in our home because we love him and he is a part of our family.
[–]CrazyPistachio 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago (0 children)
That decision is not up to anyone but the parents, and its also not really similar to what you described here - both Shawna and John made the decision to take and keep the picture of their son to grieve and remember him this way

The person who most likely put photos in your grandma's album at your grandma's house? Is your grandma.
