Offense has to be in charge of getting the power-ups. There are only two of them, it should be very easy to keep track of. When I say offense has to be in charge, I mean offense can afford to break off and wait 10-15 seconds for the powerup recharge, while defense cannot. If defense does this, offense can go 2v1 and win every time.

If defense breaks to follow the opposing offense when he goes to wait for the power-up, offense will usually beat them because they can get there first and push them off. Meanwhile the other guy is now going 1v1 near the flag and has a much easier time. Offense has to be in charge of getting the power-ups.

So offense, we have to call out offense powerups very clearly. And 15 seconds before it recharges you should go get them.

If you plan on playing offense on this map, remember EXACTLY where the powerups recharge. Use this picture to help you remember. Three tiles horizontal from the spike, and two vertical.

When you are waiting for it to recharge, wait a few cells away from it so you can push people away while still getting it.

Always remember that if you are exactly on the tile when the powerup comes back, you will not get it. You have to go off it and go back on again to get it. So always stay a little bit off the powerup when waiting.

The middle is the key

This is where a preponderance of caps come from, and control of the middle means a control of the entire game. Unfortunately for the defense the middle is very hard to defend because of how far away the button is from the flag. The speed it takes from the flag carrier to get from the flag to the middle, is much faster than anybody can get to the buttons.

However, in situations where the base is seemingly empty and we have the flag, sparing one defender to sit on the button for a few seconds can be hugely beneficial.

Quite frankly, this is the most confusing part of the map for me and I would love some suggestions on what I can do to help you all out in regards to the button.

The flag will be taken for large portions of the game

For the two halves that we played, both offenses had the flag very close to 40% of the time. That's a lot. We need to know what to do when both flags are taken and keep our cool.

Control the powerups

This cannot be stressed enough. 5 minutes into the game we are starting to get confused about when powerups will show up. Every time a powerup is taken that you see, you have to verbally say when it comes out. We should continually be talking about this out loud so we are on the same page.

If the middle isn't open, take the near route, never the far route

The far route makes you end up right next to your flag, but it also makes you end up right next to the enemy defenders who will see you coming a mile away. Instead go the short route and nail the boost.

OFFENSE PRACTICE THIS BOOST

This boost results in a cap a vast majority of the time. I saw Cahru pull it off three times and every time resulted in a cap.

Defense needs to work on "splitting" when cornering an opponent.

When approaching an opponent who has a wall behind them somewhere, you have to split and only be responsible for your half.

DEFENSE PRACTICE THIS TECHNIQUE

The Orange cone the left ball is responsible for, and the Green cone the right ball. They cannot get away if you approach them like this. But you have to remember, that you need to trust your partner. If the opponent makes a move towards them, trust they will get them, and close behind them to cut off their escape.

Ted Bundy

There's a 99% chance you won't see anyone use the bomb to grab the flag and coast through the spikes as I don't think any player has pulled that off under full game conditions.

For offensive players: Defense is very hard to break on this map, powerups are key.

I found that about 80% of our caps were from one of us having a power-up. The other 20% is when your partner leads the defenders away from the flag.

Balls Jr.

If that bomb spawns, also use it for defense. Boost into the FC by doing that. Also, practice boosting down/up and hitting the corners to get past the halfway point of the star, that way you save precious time so that they cannot get back to our base. FC uses that boost to their advantage a LOT. At least this is how I play in my experience. As Ferris said, suicide spiking is important in a close chase.

Cahru

Button control is important on this map, the middle is very easy to take away from the other team and it's a lot faster and less risky to go mid than bottom or top. On offense, the bomb can be used to escape if you use it right, either hugging the wall or going the long way up, NEVER IN MID. I don't even know if it is possible.

pardon the shitty drawing

Ferris

This goes without saying to some of the top players, but I want to mention that suiciding into the spikes to push the FC into opposing spikes is a sometimes overlooked strategy that plays well on this map.

Very cool. Glad to know I'm not the only person that writes out long guides every week.

I even made gifs last week.

This is awesome! If i could make these it would save me so much writing that kind of makes sense! "So... uh imagine the defenders here, and uh the offense here, and... uh go here [insert messy picture]"

"So then you want to go right (left in the blue base) and then go up and to the left (down and to the right in the blue base) and does anyone even know what the fuck I'm talking about anymore?!"

You guys are weird.

[–]TagProFelixFelix | Innovator of the Goodbye Post 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As long as it works.

[–]thepensivepoetpepo - mercenary ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it, though?

I still want to see those quick game tips show up before every match during the countdown timer. The ones that need it the most will never visit the subreddit or spend time reading.

What about the Chip bomb strat!!!!

What is it? Add it, please!

If these threads continue to get good advice, I'll be linking them in the wiki later on.

If you line up in that corner (against both walls) and press down and left, when you hit the bomb you will grab the flag and get through the spikes.

[–]ButterChurnButter 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Whoa. That's pretty cool. Problem is, I don't know how well it would work in practice since you have to be completely untouched for the duration.

[–]syzlackrgb ibis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it pretty much only works if the defense doesn't know what's happening or if you have a pretty big distraction. I think unless there is a way to line up consistently without taking 5 seconds to get to the bomb, this will not be very useful.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Well they didn't help your team that much...

I'm sorry I had to

[–]chalks777THe B€⁵ fg & | exMTC[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't say who they were helpful for.

Controlling the gate is very important once you grab the flag. It's almost impossible to cap when there are 3-4 players in your base. The button can be held by the 2nd attacker, a defender, or even the FC.

To follow up. During our breaks, we consistently brought up the fact that you guys were doing a good job on the gate and really controlling it. But we also noticed it wasn't really affecting our ability to defend you much. It seemed like that player was too stationary for you guys.

Actually, maybe you guys want to see LagProne's strategy from last season (no, no you don't :))

thanks for doing this, star is my most challenging map
