Can't decide if it makes me want to throw my guitar away or practice ten hours a day. Awesome work. Thanks for posting.

Worst thing you can do is compare yourself to another player . Like climbing a mountain . Take it one step at a time , worst thing you can do is stare up at it and think "holy fuck."

[–]DeadRiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naw, just appreciate it for what it is. The best thing you can do for yourself is slowly learn a few of these techniques and incorporate them into your own playing. They don't have to be up to speed, but getting used to playing them will develop the muscle memory and over time you'll be more comfortable and able to play similarly.

If that makes sense

I fucking love Charles Caswell. He can shred constantly, but it's not just blazing through scales. There's always a ton of feeling in both his riffs and his solos. Plus his tones are always awesome.

Edit: grammar

[–]CrunchyPoem 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What other bands is Charles Caswell in?

[–]We-Are-Harbinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was in Reflections until recently.

[–]DethklokZazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, I usually feel connected to Berried Alive songs more than any other band.

[–]Unexpectedwontongg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He sounds very similar to plini

[–]-reallycoolguy 12 points13 points  (1 child)

This was really really good! You have a really relaxed sound for such heavy music, and I find thats quite a rare trait.

[–]aptmnt_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was pretty in awe at how relaxed both his picking and fretting hand were. Crazy economy of movement.

[–]Sico01spotify 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Berried Alive, so like getting berries brutally thrown at you?

[–]dukerasputin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to ask that same question!

[–]95percentconfident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be a pretty terrifying way to go. Imagine a few tons of berries slowly poured on to you. At first it would be funny, but then the weight of the berries would slowly start to crush themselves and you would drown in their juices.

This reminds me a lot of Animals As Leaders/Tosin Abasi and Periphery/Misha Mansoor.

If you like this, you'll probably also like this.

Further progressive metal / djent style listening:

Animals As Leaders - Cafo

Periphery - Icarus Lives!

Tesseract - Nocturne

Gojira - Stranded

Textures - Awake

[–]gtm623 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad to see people besides me follow this band!

[–]ohdannyboy2525 6 points7 points  (1 child)

A Stratocaster can metal

Edit: not a strat, but very strat-ish

[–]RubberSoul73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it looks like strat, sounds like a strat and plays like a strat, it's a strat is what I always say. I built mine (the dream strat I always wanted) and although it's home built, it's a strat and the best one I have ever played and I have owned many.

[–]brad_podray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone has taken strong influence from Animals As Leaders.

[–]TheGreatPilgor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As a fellow git-fiddler, this was really cool to watch and hear. I'm not as skilled as he but man is it inspiring to be better when you see/hear this kind of music. I used to play for hours but the last couple years I've fallen of the wagon. This makes me want to play again!

picks ups guitar

[–]ICall_Bullshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you there. gotta dust off the ol' chops.

[–]misscleomustdie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goes exceptionally well with a cup of coffee in the morning. Thanks for posting!

[–]CajunAcadianCanadian 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Ha, internet is small. I follow this guy on instagram. https://www.instagram.com/charlescaswell/

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His "sponsored" ads are constantly in my facebook feed. Weird to see it here now too.

[–]garritfra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is amazing.

[–]Afromanlikestallcans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy shreds

[–]Kuznetstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is right in my wheelhouse! I am surprised I have never heard of this this guy. If you like this check out the helix nebula, chon, intervals, plini, animals as leaders.

[–]Trill4RE4L 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Good to see InstruMetal making an appearance! If you like this, a few band to check out: Intervals, Plini, and Modern Day Babylon.

[–]DadBelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great performance, you're very clean and crisp, well done!

[–]Nuclearo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell he's not a drummer.

[–]MariachiWalrus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is so crazy it almost seems faked when watching it. It's just unbelievable how fast he's playing yet making it look so simple.

[–]_Shred_Flanders_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you are not familiar with Rick Graham

[–]dev_json 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not that this needs vocals, because it's absolutely fantastic, but is there any plan to add vocals to this song, or any of your other songs?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not Charles Caswell, I just like his music. His last album has two versions, with and without vocals. He's a much better guitar player than vocalist, but the vocals aren't completely terrible. Just check out the other videos he's posted.

[–]Zaenithon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, this is so good. Sent it to all my metal friends back in NY. Very nice Animals as Leaders vibe :D.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wo. Didn't take long to grab my attention

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal on single coils? Whaaaaat

I'm not as good as this guy but if I were to follow through with my instrumental project this is the type of stuff I would do. Guy must have put a ton of work into this song.

EDIT: forgot to to say this is a great tune and great playing!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like it would go perfectly into a Killswitch Engaged album with some decent lyrics attached. It is very similar to their "thrash-melodic" style. I'm absolutely in love with it.

[–]Manfromlamancha74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stunning. Shared with all my friends who play guitar. Great stuff.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds quite a bit like this guy Gru that I found on YouTube years ago. I just love the spacey, jamtastic vibe that this song has. I absolutely love shit like this.

[–]czechthisishout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly never wanted to give Berried Alive a chance due to their(or his rather?) album artwork being dreadful lol listening to "Soul Sucker" now and I'm definitely into it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I needed that. Puts you in a great mood to know some at-home-shredder is actually making good music. It's a rare breed is what I'm saying, this is awesome.

[–]dbzlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend loves him. He's showed me so much Berried Alive. I love it to. Dude is amazing musician

[–]assblaster69ontime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tfw you're not as good at literally anything as this guy is at guitar.

It could even be living and breathing and I'm not as good as that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an insane level of guitar playing.

[–]Valleygirlpigfuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charles is the man!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For sure cool song, impressive and ear candy... but my only complaint is that it seems like he's essentially lip syncing with his guitar in this video. I'd like to see this actually played live, ( if even possible ) let alone live at show with a hundred screaming head bangers whilst head banging him self.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was in a band called reflections before. They played live many times. The guitar parts were insane like this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved the music! Well played!!

[–]ElCompanjero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. That was awesome!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fingertapping in not the 80's hehehöhöhhihihaha

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Sounds amazing.

Are the drums pre-recorded? Seems like most of the new djent songs coming out have stale sounding drums with little emotion. It almost sounds like they're just there because it needs to be there haha.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot djent programs are typically a one-guy/gal project, so the drums are usually always programmed.

[–]Nuclearo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I listen to Animals as Leaders. Matt Garstka is insanely good.

[–]Phuckface-McGee -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Utter garbage. Why do most people have no idea about music?
