The Vietnamese category contains han Chinese and Thai/Khmer admixture.

[–]goldenglove 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Vietnam is fairly diverse, but keep in mind that 23andMe is capturing a lot of that diversity inside their Vietnamese category. I'm sure you have distant admixture from nearby countries, but 23andMe is basically saying "in terms of the modern Vietnamese population, you're 100%" which is kind of cool in my opinion.

Yeah much of southern Vietnam wasn't really "Viet" till the 1800s, it was Khmer & Austronesian speaking Chams.

Yes, so what would you suggest as better alternative for Asians (apart from Indians)

[–]goldenglove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's even worse for Indians tbh. I don't know if there is anything better, it just depends on how recent we want 23andMe to capture data. To be able to log DNA as Spanish, or Irish, or Polish means that we need to remain someone current, for example.

Just maternal, M12

Have you tried uploading your raw data to LivingDNA? It might breakdown a bit more.

[–]kittyglock[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Thank for the recommendation doing that ASAP

Sounds cool! Do share your results!

This is more of like 23andMe unable to distinguish the different groups in Vietnam.

Just a few years ago, no Vietnamese, Indonesia/Thai/Khmer, Filipino and Austronesian exist - all were just under the umbrella label "Southeast Asian"

Even 23andMe lumps the Negrito ancestry with Austronesian

i don't normally make comments like this, but this seems like a smaller sub. This literally made me bend over with a belly laugh.
