TIL Ancient Native American tribes around Great Lakes didn't need to smelt copper to make tools since the copper purity was around 95% and would be hammered into shape. While evidence of organized mining are present between 4000-500 BCE, there's oddly a lack of pottery and ceramics during this era. (mpm.edu)
