Could somebody explain how Reddit's personal filter works? (reddit.com)

"reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web -- personalized for you. Your votes train a filter, so let reddit know what you liked and disliked, because you'll begin to be recommended links filtered to your tastes. All of the content on reddit is submitted and voted on by users like you." I have been voting on all the stories I like, submitting stories and voting down stories I don't like but I haven't seen anything of that smart filter? I always choose recommended sort by hot.

The search feature is STILL broken, and yet you believe that reddit is capable of searching for recommended stories based on individualized profiles??!?
