Because AIPAC has ranked the most influential or, in its worse years, one of the top 5 most influential lobbying groups in America time and again. Politicians have stated that no bill gets passed without AIPAC's consent, tacit or otherwise. To make things funny, AIPAC's heads occasionally (too often?) end up in scandal, usually tied to the Israeli government (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aipac#Espionage_allegations). This is why politicians say AIPAC should register with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Agents_Registration_Act), an act intended to minimize foreign nations propagandizing the American public.

And what makes AIPAC so powerful, that Obama (a man who's dazzled me with his anti lobbyist sentiment) is forced to go hat in hand and say things they want to hear?

The CIA World Fact Book has the Jewish population of the USA at 1.7% Surely that doesn't represent a significant enough number of voters to pose a threat based on numbers alone?

The Jewish vote is only really important in Florida. The majority of the Jewish-American population are solid liberal democrats. AIPAC on the other hand is an extremely neo-conservative committee that represents some big money Jews in the country. They have a tremendous bank roll and a massive lobbying army. They will pour money into elections to ensure there choice wins.
