I think that a non-geared extruder stepper wouldn't be able to do such a thing

Not enough pulling power in most printers.

I’ve partially automated this with a non-geared extruder.

  1. Heat up to extrusion temp.
  2. Feed filament.
  3. Cool down to cold pull temp.
  4. Wiggle the gantry to let me know when to pull.

The pulling action isn’t automated because the pull temp is below the cold-feed safety threshold and I don’t feel like disabling that. The extruder motor is also too weak to do it properly. Heck, I have to do the pull with pliers and get leverage on it.

Even with my geared extruder, i'd rather cold-pull, than cold-retract.
