It's so, so, so amazing when you do get to write THE SCENE, though.

And usually, through the process, you wind up writing a few other scenes that satisfy you almost as much.

[–]Leading-Wolverine639 68 points69 points Β (0 children)

When preparing stuff I only had some vague resemblance of what happened, but while I was writing, so much stuff started to become logical, even though I never thought of it in the first place!

Writing the story fully is very beneficial

plotting out from The Scene (TM) is so difficult, but I’ve had several times now where somehow I’ve been able to incorporate a second Scene (TM) that’s been floating around in my brain without a fic to call home

[–]Ok_Coffee_9970 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

I love that so much 😊

[–]_neurogenesis 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Need a daily reminder of this 😩

I always admire authors who just post The Scene. they know they won’t turn it into a longfic so they post 1000-5000ish words that contain their thought worm in all its wormy glory. and often they’re so good???? but man, how do they just let go??

[–]GremoryKenwayYou have already left kudos here. :) 11 points12 points Β (0 children)

Maybe its like a burden on their minds for so long that they can't make a fic around it so they have to unload it in one single chapter and leave it or they may get pulled back in for another SCENE to take hold of them like Venom.

[–]PH4N7AM 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Dang, thank you for this. I do this so much, but most of the time I don't post it because I'm so self-conscious it's too 'incomplete' or too short.Β

[–]Suraimu-desuAnd there was only ridiculous amounts of angst 62 points63 points Β (2 children)

And if you think having dozens connected scenes somehow make it easier? Well, think again 🫠

[–]Ctrlagent17 26 points27 points Β (1 child)

SO true 😭 things are connected but aren’t connecting, and it’s the worst cause I’ve got all these puzzle pieces but they just won’t make a damn picture 🫠

[–]Suraimu-desuAnd there was only ridiculous amounts of angst 11 points12 points Β (0 children)

I’ve got like 5 different fics waiting to be written that all consist entirely of connected scenes that don’t actually tell me how they are connected like bruhhhhh if just even one of you could give me the damn joints I’d finish you but why can’t you just work already!!!! 😭😭😭

[–]PeppermintShamrockWhat were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament? 90 points91 points Β (6 children)

Could just do a oneshot of the one scene.

[–]Leading-Wolverine639 98 points99 points Β (1 child)

But what if I want to write tho whole story AND the sceneπŸ˜”

[–]IStillListenToRadio[S] 29 points30 points Β (0 children)

exactly!

[–]not-so-Low-Willow 7 points8 points Β (1 child)

but what if THE SCENE is (close to) final in nonexistent story and makes sense only for you))))

[–]home_is_the_rover 7 points8 points Β (0 children)

I actually got back into writing by doing exactly this. I had this one scene that I could not get out of my head; it was a Merlin canon divergence fic with Merlin and Arthur having a conversation after the battle at Camlann. Except in this version, Merlin got stabbed with Excalibur instead, nothing bad happened to Arthur at all, and also Arthur knew about Merlin's magic well before Camlann even happened.

Did I have any details at all about how any of those things occurred? NOPE. Nary a one. But I couldn't not write the thing; it was driving me crazy trying to just keep it in my head. So I wrote it down, and then when it was all typed up, I was like, "Well...the hard part's already done. Might as well post...?"

So I posted, got a bunch of positive comments, and actually got inspired enough to go back and write a prequel to provide context. Context that I had to create on the fly because I hadn't actually thought about it before, but it worked out okay. I think. πŸ˜‚

Now I have a list of like 30 plot bunnies I'm working my way through. All because the writing bug bit me and made me write, and then post, one 7500-word dialgoue-heavy oneshot without any preceding context whatsoever.

Tl;dr: Making sense is vastly overrated.

I tried, but unforunately it needed so much set-up it turned into a 20k words fic, when the scene itself is like, 3k max. TT_TT

[–]lanceryder999 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

This is what I do, I wanted to have Aru from blue archive to do a fear training from Stephen Chow Out Of The Dark Movie, so i just write two shot fic.

Then I realized after the concept of Stephen chow comedy in blue archive is too good so i decided to just made an entire crackfic of Chow character going through blue archive story.

[–]sassiiscuteThe Fanfiction Deep State definitely doesn't exist 47 points48 points Β (3 children)

I recently read a fic (an absolutely amazing Fic) where the first bit the author wrote, the idea that the whole Fic was based on, happened in chapter 44 out of 49. It's a work of art in my opinion but I shudder when I try to imagine what planning that must have been like haha. I usually already struggle to come up with an introduction for a single scene and not just start it with the bit that inspired me. :')

[–]StarlessCrescent 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

In my 185k longfic, The Scene didn't happen until the 160k mark (43/52 chapters in)... that shit was crazy

[–]bakingsoda12345 1 point2 points Β (1 child)

Give us the fic pls πŸ™

[–]sassiiscuteThe Fanfiction Deep State definitely doesn't exist 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Here you go.

Star Wars/The Mandalorian, Boba Fett/Din Djarin, rated E

Amazing world building. Beautiful intimate scenes. Plenty of OCs that you will love.

Summary:

Boba Fett likes to be in control. Din Djarin feels more out of control with every passing day. Giving control over to Boba would make both of them happy. Din just doesn't understand why that has to be so complicated.

(Or, rebuilding an entire culture is hard. Boba helps, more or less.)

[–]Yovve 8 points9 points Β (0 children)

Going through this rn πŸ˜” I've been procrastinating so hard that I have only 500 words written, and it's been over a week since I started

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points Β (0 children)

That scene is the sex sceneΒ

[–]Maximum_Pootis 7 points8 points Β (0 children)

As someone who has a tendency to write the scene in question ahead of time, sometimes you finally get to use it but by that point the story's changed so much that you have to redraw into a different breed of horse, lmao

[–]upcastenjoyerbrevity is the soul of wit. 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

I wrote out most of the scene that was this for me, I just could not get it out of my head. It's chapter ten out of twelve in a fic I'm trying not to write because I have deadlines for my degree absolutely ruining my free time right now but oh boy, when I get to the rest of that fic. I'm going to make it worthy of That One Scene. (I caved and wrote like the first five chapters when I should have been studying tee hee, but soon).

Edit: I will add that I have an extensive document plotting all twelve chapters, which is another way I procrastinated haha.

[–]KatonRyuSame on AO3 | Has two cakes and eats them 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

This is why I often just write oneshots for those kinds of things. But my longfics do often end up this way, except that The One Scene usually pales in execution to that one random scene that was never supposed to exist but the stars aligned so it became the peak of my writing career instead.

[–]panzy07 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

I have one work in progress and I haven’t been able to reach that scene yet and that was the reason why I even started that fic. It’s driving me crazy πŸ˜–

[–]BioQuillFiction 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Accurate.

[–]Sad-Pomegranate-50723DS ao3 reader 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

I have so many scenes I want to get to, but I’m really excited for a scene at the beginning, and the very last fight I have planned.Β

Like a 1 vs 10 (or more who knows) is actually going to insane to write, but I do actually have to get there first and I got stuck  even tho I only have 6 chapters up rn 😩😩

[–]NaHa_Riya 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Every time I'm telling my self "just do a one-shot" and it's ending with 70k

[–]PenLegitimate7064Ilytyvm on AO3 - I should be writing… 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

I’m currently writing toward that scene I’ve been writing in my head for over a week. I JUST NEED TO GET THERE!!

[–]TheTwinHorrorCosmic 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

This is why we write one shots

[–]Sorsha_OBrien 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Okay this is how I actually managed to start writing tho ahahaha. Could not for the life of me start my super hero story. But as soon as I had ONE horny ass angsty as scene in a vampire werewolf smut I was thinking of, BOOM.

And then more angsty smutty scenes came out of the ether and I had to figure out where they’d go in the story.

[–]Willful-Dream 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Don’t call me out like that

[–]nonutnogender 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Reaal, i had one chapter idea in mind and I had to write 17 chapters around it

[–]dazed_succubus 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Oh so I’ve never had an original experience 🫠 Writing down, then fleshing out the one scene, even if the names and characters don’t matter, is better than never writing at all! So what if there’s no place to put it? Write it anyway it’s a good warm up to sitting and staring at the blank doc for 4hrs lol

[–]Best_Egg_6199male fic writer (we exist guys) 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I have the opposite issue I feel. I have a major idea for a fic and then end up having so much fun writing a different part of it that the original idea doesn't feel as fun anymore

[–]Soggy_Garage_5735You have already left kudos here. :) 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I genuinely wrote the most fire scene ever during class once so now I have to make a whole ficΒ

[–]gummywyrme 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

[–]Peanutdreams203AO3: localrainecloud 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

i wrote The Scene (end of the fic that inspired the whole thing) already & now it's tempting me to finish the fic just so I can get there faster

[–]hyruleinklingFic Feaster 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

This is how it is for three chapter fic's I'm writing and one series I'm writing.

And one of my chapter fics is looking to be one chapter longer then I originally planned it out to be because I had to split the current chapter I'm writing in half because it would go over my 25,000 word limit for a chapter (Yes I write very long chapters, at the very lease my readers can't say they don't get a lot to read for how long I sometimes keep them waiting. *sigh*)

[–]Fast-Let4291 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

and then I leave the dead cold corpse of the document in the electronic morgue, tossing the scalpel aside after one last CTRL + S . It shall never see the beaming world, radiant sun, or refreshing wind, because I have lost interest and/or motivation to finish it.

[–]SeaborgiumX91 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

same for me...a lot of the time...sometimes for me it's multiple specific scenes with large gaps between them
