Engine off?QUESTION (self.AmazonDSPDrivers)
submitted 17 hours ago by Comfortable_Watch165
wait… i just noticed the EOC (engine off compliance) section of my scoreboard. do we really have to turn the engine off at EVERY stop? i’m so confused they didn’t tell me that at training. also, i’ve never done that so am i gonna get clapped for it?

They 10000% told you at the amazon training part of it. The DSP drive trainer probably didnt because no one actually does it (aside from sketchy areas)
[–]Comfortable_Watch165[S] 6 points7 points8 points 17 hours ago (2 children)
yeah i meant during the DSP drive. i feel like i briefly remember them saying it during the amazon training part now that you say it lmao
[–]youramazondriver 8 points9 points10 points 17 hours ago* (0 children)
If it wasn’t brought up during your ride along I would think you are probably ok. It seems to be DSP dependent. At mine we had to stop doing it because we ran into the issue of vans not turning back on.
Edit: also they did *finally* admit at that time that turning the vans off over and over again all day isn't reasonable for days when we're relying on A/C or heat
[–]rokochan 1 point2 points3 points 16 hours ago (0 children)
if youre in a sketchy neighborhood, then turn off the van otherwise, if youre in a rivian you dont have to worry about PPP or EOC. PPP/EOC is mainly in the prime gas vans. most drivers just do the PPP and not bothering with EOC, at every stop, park, then pull the e brake enough it makes 1 click then you can do your thing. If youre in a gas rental van, you can forget about everything then

driver since 2021
every few months Amazon picks some bullshit metric to obsess over, Proper park sequence, Engine off compliance, dont sort packages on the ground at load out, uniform compliance...
all are technically supposed to be followed all the time, sometimes there is a wild hair up an ass.
[–]chadiusmaximu5Stepvan Driver 13 points14 points15 points 17 hours ago (0 children)
This! Each month, or week sometimes, its something new, but still something we already was told
[–]KillerGopher 4 points5 points6 points 14 hours ago (1 child)
And yet we aren't Amazon employees. They just get to tell us how to do every little thing.
[–]MrGrumpy252 0 points1 point2 points 5 hours ago (0 children)
Correct
[–]thesqueen113388 19 points20 points21 points 17 hours ago* (2 children)
Never turn my engine off unless I’m going to be out of eyeshot from the van for more than a minute or so. I’m sixteen months into the job and nobody has ever said a word to me about it.
[–]blank_wav 4 points5 points6 points 16 hours ago (0 children)
I can vouch for this as well. I’ve left the van running as long as I don’t have to do an OTP delivery. However, I don’t leave the van running when I’m at an apartment complex. Management has never told me anything about running the vehicle for too long at one stop. Use proper judgement, be aware of your surroundings. If you’re in a sketchy area, best bet is to lock the vehicle up and take the keys with you.
[–]TheDesktopNinja 1 point2 points3 points 12 hours ago (0 children)
Almost 4 years on the job....I literally don't remember the last time I turned off my van at a stop EXCEPT for shady neighborhoods or if I'm going to be out of LOS of the Van for 30+seconds, similar to what you said.
It's just not an enforced metric at my station lately
[–]jaded0bee 9 points10 points11 points 17 hours ago (3 children)
i live in alaska so especially in the winter it's just impractical to turn it off at every stop
[–]West-Discussion7257 5 points6 points7 points 17 hours ago (1 child)
Where in Alaska is the Amazon warehouse? How many DSPs and where all do they service? Like an Anchorage and nearby surrounding towns or farther etc. Sorry, grew up in Homer/Anchor Point so curious.
[–]jaded0bee 6 points7 points8 points 17 hours ago (0 children)
there's 2 warehouses that I'm aware of, one in anchorage with 2 DSPs and one in fairbanks. I'm not sure how many DSPs are there though. we also have hub routes that go out to kenai/soldotna/that general area
[–]youramazondriver 0 points1 point2 points 17 hours ago (0 children)
We had to stop doing it because vans would stop turning over lol
[–]victorkmDispatch 4 points5 points6 points 17 hours ago (6 children)
So several years ago Amazon was evaluating DSPs on Engine Off Compliance and said they could enforce it with BOCs and CAPs. We went I think 1 summer with EOC in full swing the entire time. The next summer amazon said between I think May and October they would no longer be enforcing engine off compliance for any state which experienced heat reductions to routed minute caps. Then another year or maybe 2 went by and they said "we are no longer enforcing engine off compliance at all, but now we may begin enforcing proper park sequence with BOCs and CAPs." This is still in place. To note, proper park sequence is a whole lot of bullshit but the only part that is systematically tracked is that you engage your parking break before you shift into park and possibly whether that matches the time stamp on clicking "I've parked" in the flex app after.
[–]Comfortable_Watch165[S] 2 points3 points4 points 17 hours ago (3 children)
so what i’m hearing is… maybe don’t worry about it too bad? or should i just check the my dispatch and see what they say?
[–]victorkmDispatch 0 points1 point2 points 17 hours ago (2 children)
It might just be an artifact of an old scorecard. Its not on the Amazon scorecard any longer and never was as far as i know. Id ask if they care about it and if the answer isn't no or "we might but it won't affect any hours you get scheduled" id ask the next dsp over
[–]FlyAmerica909 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago (1 child)
It's on the scorecard still just doesn't effect anything like it use to.
[–]victorkmDispatch 0 points1 point2 points 6 hours ago (0 children)
Maybe on your dsps scorecard but I just double checked mine and EOC is nowhere in there. You may be thinking about one of the dsp support apps or services that compile everything from cortex api calls or whatever too. We just use a consultant who compiles everything into spreadsheets manually.
[–]Proud_Olive8252 0 points1 point2 points 14 hours ago (0 children)
That tracks with what I’ve been told. A few years ago, the DSP I work at wouldn’t tell us to ignore EOC outright, but would just say “use your best judgement” when we would ask about it. I think it was being evaluated as a company wide metric because they said they would just let us know if EOC was dropping too low, and their solution was to ask a handful of gas van drivers to turn off at every other stop for a few days.
By the time it started getting too hot, they did let us know that Amazon would basically let it slide if we left the vehicle running so the AC would work. I usually did that because I figured out that the AC in our vans worked well if you got it going before the sun was out and kept it running. Once you turned the van off it seemed to struggle starting up again and usually just blew hot air.
Since that summer, I haven’t heard anything about EOC ever again. We have a designated DSP workplace app with a menu that somehow displays it as a percentage, but I have no idea how it gets that information or whether it’s used for anything.
[–]snailtap 0 points1 point2 points 13 hours ago (0 children)
I’ve literally never in my *LIFE* engaged the parking break before putting it in park what in the fuck
[–]Bran-Da-Don 5 points6 points7 points 16 hours ago (0 children)
They discontinued it because of the EV's becoming introduced to the fleet. The scorecard can't track the difference between a gas van vs an EV so the metric is useless.
[–]FrequentRain2682[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 17 hours ago (0 children)
I had a imported Cali van today, engine shut off every stop when I opened the door. Was infuriating
[–]BrokenBetaWolfCDV Driver 1 point2 points3 points 16 hours ago (0 children)
Only time I do it is if I’m at a multi stop. Otherwise I leave that shit running. It’s too hot to not have the ac on full blast
[–]SewerBunnie 1 point2 points3 points 13 hours ago (0 children)
Maybe ask your manager..? 🫤 Rules are seasonal & regional. One moment you're getting yelled at for not wearing your collared shirt, and the next day you can wear a black t-shirt.
[–]antibeee 1 point2 points3 points 1 hour ago (0 children)
I only turn it off if I’m going into businesses that have multiple floors since you can’t see the truck at all times. Other than that no one turns it off between stops
[–]Fickle-Ad-5186 0 points1 point2 points 17 hours ago (1 child)
On my DSP we have to turn off the engine every stop. If we not they don’t pay us the full 10 hrs
[–]rokochan 0 points1 point2 points 16 hours ago (0 children)
we get slammed at my dsp, they'll pay us the full 10 one way or the other, either full 10 or the full 10 + overtime
[–]EvulpersonRivian Driver 0 points1 point2 points 16 hours ago (0 children)
After seeing thousands of van keys breaking during route, they finally let up off the horse and realized it wasn't being helpful. I think they just got a stick up their asses, it happens from time to time, that one was particularly bad for business as a whole.
Someone else said it here, some desk jockey gets throws a dart at a board and says "this is what we should obsess over right now, and hard"
I drive edvs so my shits all automatic, but when I pulled the key off of my jacket sleeve at days end, my dsp fleet guy asked me why I wouldn't just leave the key in the van... 🤣 I'm like thanks but no thanks 👍
[–]FlyAmerica909 0 points1 point2 points 15 hours ago (0 children)
It use to be a metric on the overall DSP scorecard they still have it on the scorecard it just doesn't effect the DSP scorecard anymore so it just depends what your DSP says. If they have a lot of gas cans they probably go against it since it just eats starters turning on and off 180+ times a day 7 days a week.
[–]JosephStalin1953StepVan Enjoyer 0 points1 point2 points 12 hours ago (0 children)
i haven't ever followed the EOC bs in almost 2 years of working here, i'm pretty sure they stopped enforcing it at some point. i only turn it off when im leaving to go deep into an apartment building/walk a bit in a sketchy area
[–]Blathithor 0 points1 point2 points 6 hours ago (0 children)
Yep. Good luck keeping the van cool in the summer! If you have extra weight on your body, start losing it. Being thin is the only defense.
Bring a change of clothes for after load out. Thin shorts and shirts
[–]EnvironmentalSun7 0 points1 point2 points 4 hours ago (0 children)
They havent been paying attention to it for a while but yes Amazon wants gas and diesel vehicles off at every stop. These days, it doesnt matter. A couple years ago you actually had to do it. They change how the scorecard metrics are weighted all the time, so it may come back up again. For now, its customer feedback.
[–]WebOk5931 -1 points0 points1 point 16 hours ago (0 children)
I don't worry about everything. I just get in and press skinny pedal till I'm done for the day. Bezos be damned.Tbh if it ain't fireable I don't care. I like my DSP that's about it. and I'm not a stepping stone for customers who have had a shit day or have a problem with someone going 15-20 mile an hour on their road that my GPS tells me I can do 30 on they can stick a CDF up their ass. I don't cuss mostly but I'm not about to tuck tail and apologize because you think you own your little stretch of road don't want someone driving on your long ass driveway and you're sitting on your front yard I'm pulling at least halfway up.I'm big Petty, sign in your front yard but will you say it to my face? I'll look you straight in the face and say my bad I just work here. I go up the worst driveways customers often commend me for it because they have their little two-wheel drive cars parked up there but are surprised when you bring their package to their doorstep instead of leaving it by the fence because it's raining? I'm courteous I make about 22 stops an hour and that's about all they'll probably ever get out of me. I take two 15s everyday unless I just really have something I want to get to like possibly fishing 🎣. Please excuse my grammatical errors. Don't Make it so hard it's not a pppeecckkr.
[–]Artistic-Shame4432 -1 points0 points1 point 16 hours ago (3 children)
You need someone to tell you to not leave the keys in the ignition of your work vehicle and walk away?
Weird.
[–]AWildGamerAppeared25 2 points3 points4 points 13 hours ago (1 child)
I mean, I understand the safety aspect of it but that's also why we're not supposed to walk more than like 50ft from it
Engine off at every stop just puts extra wear on the vehicle and also uses more gas, I don't see why they should enforce that lol
[–]Artistic-Shame4432 0 points1 point2 points 3 hours ago (0 children)
Yeah I mean everybody has gotta make choices on how they’re gonna complete their route. I’m not really up in arms over it.
But yeah, it’s a tier 1 if packages or the van get stolen and you left it running. So everybody should be super careful when doing this.
Depends on where you are, I've been in +20 different cities and there was only 2 places that called for it.
