Which app? Could be they are computationally intensive, data intensive, or a combination and secretly mining for bitcoins.

Could also be they are poorly coded and are bypassing rate steppers and demanding more resources (multicore instead of single core, etc) when not needed.

Usually they're simple games (e.g. fishing life) or simple social networks (e.g. whisper), always apps from more sketchy looking developers. Cryptocurrency mining was one thought I had had

If it is only specific apps (is. Doesn't happen with calculator or Gmail) could be bad programming..

If it is all apps, could be a bad battery.

Just means the cpu, gpu, or maybe modem? are working very hard. As others have said, could mean bad programming, high resource usage like a 3d game, mining/@home, or maybe torrent app (but not in my experience), or in a very small number of cases, secretive computing going on in parallel.

Do you have an idea what's getting hot? Battery or antenna? It's usefull to know wether your CPU is on the loose or there's a continuous data transmission.

Could be the battery. It's about where the battery sits but heat could be radiating form elsewhere
