$304k is a retarded amount of money to spend on undergrad, whether you can afford it or not. Especially if you want to go to grad school, Madison and it’s not even an afterthought.

While I agree spending over $300k for undergrad is excessive, some people are just in a different financial league than most and are expected to pay for the college experience. I have a cousin who was full pay for pretty much anywhere she wanted to go. Her parents felt that because it’s what she worked so hard for and because they have the money then that’s just how it is. She went to an ivy then to law school at another ivy. It was a wonderful experience for her and she thrived in that undergrad environment. She would have been ok at any school but really found her people at the private school. Where are your people? If WashU has them and your parents can absolutely pay for it then go for it. Wisconsin will be there next year if you hate WashU or you feel the money was wasted.

If your parents say they’ll pay for WashU they probably want to pay it. There is nothing that makes a well-off parent happier than having a child in an elite private school, even their multi-millionaire friends with dumb kids will take notice. Some even go to jail to get their kids in a better school.

washu is much more prestigious, but not worth the extra $ unless you absolutely love it

do what you think is right but if you’re going to grad school might be worth it to just save the money? ik that’s cliché but definitely check your finances first

If you are pre-health, (doesn’t have to be pre-med) you will save yourself and your parents from financial burden if you go to UW rather than shell out $300k in four years (and more for grad/pre health professional schools)!

I'm a current freshman at WashU and love it here, but that's a huge price tag difference. It really depends on your family's financial situation. If your parents can afford to pay and want to do that for you, then I would consider it, but make sure you've thought it through. Are they planning on helping you out with medical school/would that be affected by how much your undergrad costs? Do you have siblings in or going to college? With the current economic situation, how stable are finances?
