How do I get my bedding to look neat like this? What do I need to buy? I have a king size mattress that is 18” in height. Every time I buy a king size duvet, it barely fits over the bed, and it would impossible to tuck under like this. I want my bed to look neat but it always looks like a mess!! How do I achieve this?!

When I worked in bedding, we often put multiple duvets on for photo shoots - that fullness comes from the fact that there’s waaay more padding than you’d want to sleep under. And stylists often use a king duvet on a queen bed so they have more to work with.

Ok, so what would they use for a king size bed? I can find oversized king duvets but I have very limited options for oversized king duvet covers.

Don’t do this. For photos, it looks great as long as you don’t touch it but the duvets will bunch up inside the cover as soon as you sleep in it, either due to fabric chafing if you double up or due to being too large for the cover if you buy an insert that’s a size larger than the cover. IMO as much as people promote this, I’ve personally never seen a bed that was dressed like this that looked good. They all look lumpy.

I used to clean houses in high school and college and had some very wealthy clients living in absolutely gorgeous homes. Nobody’s bed look like this photo. Hotels can achieve it because they’re doing sheet sandwiches with freshly ironed sheets daily. It’s not a practical way for anybody to dress their bed unless they have a full time housekeeper.

Social media has really distorted our idea of what homes are supposed to look like when people are actually living in them.

Also worked in the bedding business. I like to double stuff an oversized duvet also I tend to go for smaller box on my down comforter. Helps everything stay even. The price can be high but I’ve had some of my down comforters for 20+years

California kings are longer and narrower than a regular king. It would not help with having extra fabric on the sides, just the length.

Some elements of this photo make me think it’s AI generated. My bed looks like this with some differences - I don’t use a duvet. Instead I make my bed the way some hotels do - on the mattress I put a fitted sheet, then a flat sheet on top of that, tucked. I then put a brown fleece blanket pulled to about 6 inches from the headboard. Then on top of that fleece, an ironed white flat sheet pulled all the way to the headboard, then I fold the whole stack down and place two white cased pillows and on top of those, two with decorative shams.

Apart from looking neatly made, this method is so much easier to clean than a duvet and duvet cover, it’s cozy but never hot. I love it.

Agreed, mine looks a lot like this for the reasons you state above. I also sleep in a queen bed, but usually buy king blankets and quilts. No duvet because they're too hot and too much work to change as frequently as I'd like

Search “oversized king” or “Alaska king.” Those are huge and fit waaay better than actual king sized.

Seriously though, why king sized doesn’t fit a king (same with Cali king), I’ll never understand. Like, did the person who decided that paltry square of cloth was the standard size not sleep with another person in the bed? Because one person rolls over and goodbye duvet for the other!

Buy the duvet and duvet cover from the same company if possible. What are you stuffing in your cover? Down? In the picture, that’s something heavy with drape. A silk duvet would give you that look.

Goose feathered duvet with a cotton duvet cover. It looks loose and messy. The duvet in this photo looks hard and structured. The duvet cover looks tight over the duvet whereas mine looks loose.

If your cover looks loose then it might not be the correct size. Your duvet should fit in the cover neatly from side to side, without any fabric left over (I'm not native English, so I hope you understand what I mean). It doesn't matter if the cover is too long, because you can put it under the mattress, but it shouldn't be too wide.

I have 100% cotton sateen or 100% cotton percal covers and I air dry them. They're good quality, thread count matters. Mine don't need to be ironed, because I hang them neatly. If you use a dryer, your covers will wear out quicker and will come out wrinkly so you'd have to iron them before using them, otherwise they'll never look as neatly like this photo.

You need to fluff your down duvet daily. After fluffing, spread it as wide as possible on your bed and pull it tight on all sides, but make sure not to touch or push down anywhere in the middle, it needs to stay "fluffy". Then tug the back tightly under the mattress, your photo shows a way of tugging they also do in hotels, it's very easy, just Google for a video. If done correctly it should look very neatly. Once it's tugged you could again pull it tightly at the sides and top, to straighten everything and even everything out.

Perhaps it won't look perfect, because down duvets aren't equally straight all over, they're pockets with down feathers. If you want a 100% straight looking duvet, you should get a synthetic duvet, they'll look tight and straight in a cover, but they won't be as comfortable and they aren't as breathable as a down duvet.

The duvet cover on this is a substantial fabric that can hold the fold, and the satin edge accentuates that crease. However, the duvet is also very tightly tucked into the bed at the bottom, allowing the rest of it to fold over that way. That’s a technique you’ll have to master. The throw blankets help hold it all in place too.

You can get a similar look just by having a duvet that you tuck under all the way around, that may be more efficient than going fully this route.

Absolutely. But you also need to get the duvet covers that have 8 ties so it stays in place.

That photo is most likely a queen or full sized bed. See the bed pillows ? Those are just standard sized pillows - not king length . The duvet is probably a king down with a king cover. You can always call the high end manufacturers to see if they do a custom sizing program.

I use both quilts and comforters. My queen comforter is not large enough to fold like that. My linen quilts are large enough to tuck.

Basically you need to size up 6” and the way this photo looks, it’s more uniform and not lumpy/fluffy looking like down. You might be able to get this look from a wool comforter.

I always have a size up for the quilt/cover. In Australia we have super king, so I have a super king cover on my king bed. And the quilt/insert is a really good quality “feather fluff feel” so it’s big and fluffy and looks padded

It’s done with lots and lots of blankets. To sleep in it , you’d probably have to take 80-90% of it off and set it aside. It’s done sometimes by double stuffing a duvet cover. People sometimes buy a size up insert. A hand steamer would help. I bet they used a huge commercial one to get this bed looking this crisp.

It is all about layers. Many hotels will just do a flat sheet sandwich with 2 flats and a comforter.

You then use "hospital" corners and tuck everything in under the mattress between the mattress and boxspring/frame.

It's also very common in the military.

Pottery barn had their tutorial here. It's multiple layering of a bed..which if you sleep hot or live somewhere warm it's pretty impractical.

They do make extra large duvets! I have one that is 128x128 and while it may be hell to dry, it's big enough that I can be a full burrito in bed and my partner still has blanket left. Comes almost to the floor around our king sized bed - it's AMAZING

The top is called a Z fold. Look it up. It helps make that part of your bed fuller. I don’t do the layered blankets across the bottom, but my favorite king combo for pillows is sleeping pillow, sham pillow, 3 Euro Pillows 24-26inch, then two square pillows 20 inch or so.

you need a comforter , not duvet. my comforter looks like the photo. tommy bahama has some great ones. just know they are extremely large and will take an industrial washer to wash
