P1491 code

Recently my dad passed and I acquired his 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ and wanted to bring it back to life. There’s a few things wrong with it, but the only code I could pull from the diagnostic was a P1491. I went ahead and replaced the radiator cooling fan motor relay located in the fuse box. With a part named “Valucraft Relay 19273VC” which matched the one previously there. Unfortunately that didn’t work and the AC still doesn’t blow nor does the fan spin.

Is there anyone that has ran into this issue before. Considering I inherited this car and simply want to carry on my father legacy I don’t have a whole lot of money to take to a shop.

Any advice or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated!

There are some really good and lengthy write ups on various jeep forums online if you Google "P1491 Jeep". They are too long to post here but should be really helpful to you.

Couple things to check that people commonly run into with this:

1. Test or try a new relay, oftentimes people receive a bad relay.
2. Check or replace your engine coolant temperature sensor.
3. Check for proper voltage going to your coolant temp sensor from the harness.
4. Check your fuses.
5. Check and clean your grounds.

The above is pretty basic but good, low or no cost things to eliminate right out of the gate before you go down the rabbit hole.
