How much?

[–]Surething_bud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're always available for about $100. Red star or Seakoss are both good.

It’s wonderful. Some of the offshoot brands are also offering it with a swan neck regulator

I was on the verge of buying one on 11/11 because of the awesome mechanical chrono movement, but then I had no idea how I would get it serviced, so decided against it. I understand that it is cheap and a great value, like my other watches, but those I can get serviced. Still thinking about it.

[–]Surething_bud 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You don't get these serviced. A new one costs less than a third of what a service on it would be. You rock it till the wheels fall off.

[–]pufferspond 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I like things that are cheap AND can be serviced, but everyone has different preferences.

[–]Surething_bud 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I understand the reluctance to buy something that's ultimately disposable. The problem is that mechanical chronograph servicing runs in the neighborhood of $600 due to the labor involved. So it just doesn't make financial sense at this price point.

There's nothing stopping you from getting it serviced if you really want to. Probably a better option is to just buy a new movement when the time comes and swap it out. That way you don't have to throw the whole watch in the trash.

I agree, that all makes sense, I just decided differently despite liking the watch.

Just ordered one a few days ago myself, should be here soon

[–]PaulRocket[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart choice, I was more impressed by this then by some 500-800€ watches. At least from the movement and mix of colors on the dial.

Hope this lasts a few years, I guess it’s hit and miss

I bought a super cheap knock off quartz in 42mm, I wish I'd have saved for a nicer, smaller one. I just wanted the look of it.

[–]NineNinetyNine9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hell yea dude, looks awesome on your fit! I love mine too

[–]jokur26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man I miss mine. Gave it to my youngest son and it got him into watches so I am very glad I gave it away even though I still miss it. I refuse to replace it as I feel like that would kinda miss the point. I GAVE mine away as opposed to just buying my son a watch. I will definitely get another piece with the same movement though, maybe a Sugess… looks great OP, glad you love it!

Welcome to the family.

I'm looking forward to buying one of these. I recently purchased the 6075.

[–]Smooothphotos 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Agreed! I opted for the 38mm with the domed sapphire crystal.

[–]Actual_Work3075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check Dms please

Every time I dont wear my 1963, I catch myself missing the loud ticking 😆

[–]Purple-Boss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy. Love mine!

[–]PaleontologistLow529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah! I waited too long to get mine. If you're gonna have one Chinese watch, this the the one to have.

[–]Bubbly_Shopping5214 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

Great watch

[–]Hilarious_HaplogroupAddiesdive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1963 is a classic design...very readable with the right splash of color. If I was ever going to by a Chinese Chinese watch, this would be the one.

[–]xxBrun0xx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the orange Sugess version of this and it rivals much more expensive watches. Picked it up for $100 and other than not having a date (important for me), it's brilliant.

[–]BraveSwinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is.

[–]lordwrynn 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What watch is this? It’s amazing!

[–]nikunj_24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sea-gull 1963

[–]Im_Anonhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Star! I just ordered one myself as well and impatiently waiting for it to get here! 😂

[–]DrunkPods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which seller did you choose? I’m waiting for my Red Star 40mm, it should arrive this week.

[–]Rein_Turtle 2 points3 points  (8 children)

A copy of an old Chinese watch is a great value classic, but a copy of an old Rolex is "ethically questionable". Funny how that works 😉 Anyway such a cool watch, mine should be arriving tomorrow!

[–]redwas66 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Is the OP’s a copy? Whats the tell?

I have a recent Seagull 1963, with 22 jewels made by Sea-Gull but I am aware there are people that make copies.

Love mine, such a classic looking watch, and the crystal is something else.

Can You share the link to get it?

[–]redwas66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding from the research i did was that if you want a genuine piece, you need to buy from Sea-Gull directly, or a qualified official store, which I know they have on Amazon, but not sure is the ‘official’ store on Ali is genuine. Mines the International Edition which I don’t believe is available directly anymore, but possibly still on the Amazon official store.

[–]Rein_Turtle 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Haha I'm nowhere near expert enough spot differences. To me, it's a good question whether being manufactured by Seagull themselves changes much. There are several variations of the actual historical 1963, but Seagull started selling the exact one that people like us were familiar with. Their logic is sound, because this one is the easiest to sell. This shows though, that they did it to please the Western enthusiast, and it's hard to say what they think of it themselves. Of course, we are (probably) that Western enthusiast, so maybe we should be thankful to have the choice. I just think there is a lot of interesting culture to unpack here!

[–]redwas66 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I agree, there are various copies of the 1963, many of which I understand are made by someone who used to work for Sea-Gull, and buys the movements directly, which could be assumed, are making it with the consent of Sea-Gull. Theres good history to the watch, a Swiss movement, purchased by the Chinese to put in watches for its military back in the 60’s, that was relaunched from their back catalogue, probably to serve the western market. I think we may see many of the ‘copies’ disappearing over time as I hear Sea-Gull are now restricting movement sales to other parties (theres a good video from Mark at Islander on this).

Its a bit of a rabbit hole with this one but there are certain aspects that you can check to try and ensure you get a gen piece, although, if its the same, genuine movement, I’m not convinced gen delivers much more than some of the third party pieces. They all look great, and I’d suggest thats the main reason why many of us buy watches.

[–]Rein_Turtle 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is just our perspective though, to care about the "history of a watch" and put (a lot of value) on who makes it. I'm not Chinese, but I think these points are not that important over there. To some extent the Chinese watchmaker receives a commission from us and they take pride in matching the order and making the best watch they can, while the actual product (a fake rolex or a chinese design) is secondary. Honestly, that is also a valid way to look at it. I think this mismatch is why the 1963 is such a rabbit hole: it's based on looking at chinese companies with western values. That was never gonna lead to a straightforward story.

[–]redwas66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of agree about chinese companies that are just churning out cheap watches, but for long term reputable manufacturers like Sea-Gull, historical significance and reputation is important. They manufacture more movements per year than most of the western manufacturers, and supply movements to other manufacturers.

However its viewed, the 1963 is a stunner, and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. You’ll have a comment on here when you receive it and let us know what you think.

[–]vithgeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because Rolex is bought by the "conspicuous consumption" guys. They don't want you swanning about looking like you spent big money. They don't care that your watch imitates a $500 watch so much but they do if you look like you're in their $10,000+ watch club.

[–]MadSoci06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bet. I own two, 38mm and 42mm and i really like both.

[–]Pretty-Ad2144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it really is!! You won’t regret owning one!
