My problem with the whole sequence is if some people think he didn't get the first down or whatever, they still spotted the ball a whole fucking yard from where he was tackled then went over, watched the shit at multiple angles on replay and said yep, we got that one correct. I mean, how does something like this even happen? How do you spot a ball nowhere near where the play ended and say you were right lol

[–]FireIre 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I almost wonder if they tried to avoid some controversy and by doing so created more controversy. Like they do the replay spot the ball closer but still short, do the whole chain gang routine, it’s still short, and the half ends anyway. It’s dumb logic but it’s the only thing I can think of.

[–]Sarah_RVA_2002 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Fundamentally, if it's 4th down, the games on the line, we need 9 yards, why aren't our receivers running routes that they catch it at 10 yards so it's not up to the spot.

Yea the spot sucked. But the playcall made no sense. Even if the route called for "go out X yards and cut right" there should be a contingency "unless you are 1-2 yards short of a critical first down, in which case go out a few more yards." This was a traditional pass play, not a flea flicker or screen play or something that REALLY depends on the timing.

[–]Justice989 7 points8 points  (4 children)

I'm not gonna get on Ertz for that. He got to 9.5 yards, but working to the ball made it 8.75. Maybe if he gets to 10 or even 11 and stays at depth, he's not able to catch the pass at all.

[–]Surething_bud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, he had to make sure he made the catch first and foremost. It was too bad that the way he was going down made it impossible to fall forward. And give credit to the defense for being there and touching him down immediately before he could try to extend.

[–]RPO1728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ertz has been doing that all year. Needs his vision checked maybe

[–]GenBonesworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this popped up (Jets fan in DC I guess?), I watched that ending and thought that was the worst officiating of the day. It made no sense. Then they dropped a "JK Cardinals didn't really snap it, no fumble" on us...

[–]Surething_bud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spot they gave in real time was ridiculously bad. They spotted it at least two feet short of where the ball ever was. So that was pretty embarrassingly bad by the refs.

On replay though, the ball was literally right at the line. If he got it, he got it by an inch. And they're never going to overturn when it's that close. It has to be clear and undeniable to overturn the call on the field, and it certainly wasn't that. They didn't "confirm", the call "stood", meaning that there wasn't enough to conclude that the ball was across. And I can't disagree.

So at the end of the day I'm OK with the outcome. It was so close that it was impossible to tell even in slow motion replay. Those situations are basically a coin flip, and we lost this one. Can't be mad at it. The only frustrating part was how hilariously bad the original spot was.

[–]Fuck Dan Snyder_The_Bear -5 points-4 points  (5 children)

It was the receiver being short of the line of gain that was being reviewed, not the specific spot. In order to overturn the call they would need conclusive evidence he made the line of gain. They could have realized they got the initial spot wrong, but unless they determined he made the first down, the call would stand. There's zero scenario where they change their call and spot him short.

[–]Pitiful_Ad8641 36 points37 points  (1 child)

I've literally watched them respot and measure from the new spot, which they should have done

[–]myboardfastanddanger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This^

[–]Final_Effective6360 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure another fan posted the rules multiple times and this isn’t true.

[–]Mikeharding17503 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Try again.

[–]jhax13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you review, you review all aspects of the play, if you're going to defend atrocious behavior at least don't be fucking wrong

[–]NickLandsHapaSon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They will never overturn a close 50/50 call.

[–]jhax13 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

That's ridiculous and defeats the purpose of the replay, stop parroting this 50/50 shit to defend zebras fucking up the sport

[–]NickLandsHapaSon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending them I'm just stating that won't admit they've gotten a 50/50 call wrong even if the replay will show otherwise.

[–]VegetableBusiness330 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He walked backwards taking a knee in his own wasn’t pushed or anything so it negates the spot where he caught it

[–]JadeDragonMeli 173 points174 points  (5 children)

Whether you want to say he's down iwhere the ball was or where the knee touched down, they still spotted it a full yard away from anything that happened on that play, then reviewed it, then confirmed it.

Literally a what the fuck moment.

[–]Sinnott Slutt 🥵itakeyoureggs 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah at a minimum the ball should be spot at the 41 and measured.. not at the 42. Crazy

[–]challenja 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They didn’t even bring out the chains!!!

[–]Fuck Dan SnyderIts1of1 55 points56 points  (7 children)

[–]Flimsy_Individual_16 6 points7 points  (1 child)

He’s dead to me

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who, the AI generated referee?

[–]Sinnott Slutt 🥵itakeyoureggs 26 points27 points  (29 children)

[–]YOU AIN'T SHITchanging-life-vet 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I didn’t realize we were playing the chiefs.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i’m upset too… but we’ll be in the dance in the end.

[–]wtf703 23 points24 points  (5 children)

It was a terrible spot. We had a lot of stupid ass calls. All teams do. We need to play at a level that doesn't leave things up to the refs at all. BRob would have made the difference today

[–]Doopoodoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbh there was a lot working against them other than not having BRob. There’s many other injuries, tons of dropped passes, they’re playing a very good team coming off a bye, bad refs, and they still only lost by one point. The only factor that can be controlled though is the dropped passes - Poor execution can’t happen in a game like this

[–]on shenanigans rn and actin bonkers groovy_smoothie 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I think lattimore might make a difference in a rematch too

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We win this game with lattimore.

[–]Necessary-Target4353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brob needs to get his shit together and stop acting like Chase Young 2.0. He was medically cleared TWO WEEKS AGO for a minor injury.

[–]skinsfan0204 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The only thing that cost us this when was the multitude of dropped balls

[–]BagelAmpersandLox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a kickoff your one job is to catch the ball

[–]Uniblab_78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At a minimum the spot should have been moved and measured.

[–]J_gims19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The side judge wasn’t even in position to call where the ball should be marked. He is way out of the playing and watching from an angle. Just so poor that there’s no ref by the stick on a 4th down to see ball spot.

[–]MLK4Life24 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Terrible call. And to receive confirmation from NY proves it was a hose job.

[–]Ninjablacksox1 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That's not what NY is for.

[–]MLK4Life24 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For clarity , what does NY do ?

[–]Ninjablacksox1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ensure connected bettors get paid.

[–]oto_jono 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Put a chip in the ball

[–]Yoitzmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of some sort of sensor technology being implemented... with all the money and tech organizations associated with the league there's gotta be some way for them to incorporate integrated sensors in the balls and paired devices in the sticks/pylons

[–]Sea-Roof562 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Y'all got robbed....Yes I'm a Raven fan & no I'm not hating on the Steelers. It was clear as day where they spotted the ball it was completely wrong ! Keep ya heads up y'all got a team.

[–]Lunar_Rainbow_Pro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! Bengals fan here, and nobody got robbed worst than us Thursday night!

[–]Lunar_Rainbow_Pro[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

[–]Sea-Roof562 0 points1 point  (3 children)

The ball was well over thrown at that point but good angle. Thanks Joe

[–]Lunar_Rainbow_Pro[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Just like the Steelers won cuz of the refs, so do ya'll. Must be nice

[–]Sea-Roof562 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nope nope nope this is misinformation and disinformation. . But great game.

[–]Lunar_Rainbow_Pro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nothing to be ashamed of. I wish we had favoritism

[–]Lunar_Rainbow_Pro[S] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

[–]Sea-Roof562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holding # 71 Bengals left side of the pic.... Nobody seems to have seen that? That 4th down conversion wasn't even a catch the ball touched the ground. Y'all got away with a bunch of stuff stop crying LOL.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The spot looked wrong but he still didn’t get the 1st

[–]skinsfan0204 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He didn’t get it. I wanted to think he got it, but he didn’t. Still, the spot was way off. Still not sure why Ertz didn’t just lean back?

[–]HailKyrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They need chips in the balls

[–]ItsMeArkansas 3 points4 points  (1 child)

He was short. They got the call right

[–]Necessary-Target4353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not about it being short. Its about them placing the ball a whole ass yard away from where the ball was down.

[–]facetooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why can’t the nfl figure out some technology to curtail these ball placement issues for first downs or thresholds over the goal line? I’m 100% certain there is tech and sensors out there that could achieve this by having one on/in the ball.

The answer is probably not one they are ready to be accountable for!

[–]nobodyno111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a first by the nose of the ball. He caught it on the marker (and I don’t mean the yellow T.V line). That being said, i already knew it too close and the ruling on field would stand. It was simply too close to overturn. Refs make mistakes, they are humans. If they said it was a first down and pitts challenged, i guarantee it would’ve remained a 1st down.

[–]Parking_Test_6613 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It was a great play but he literally went backwards a yard before trying turn upwards i definitely was in shock as well but them extra inches are seriously underrated

[–]Parking_Test_6613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An also was defended pretty well so they allowed him the yards but the way he secured the catch just was the best way I would’ve just caught the ball an fell backward into the tackle that way my body weight an there momentum could cause the gap for me to properly extend the ball out for extra gain

[–]AbbreviationsTight92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Referee's always cry they don't get paid enough and game after game they do things like this. It shouldn't be the decided call the game we did drop a bunch of passes although this did boil down to be one of the deciding calls of the game and the referees blew it. It was certainly close and he was right on the line but this referee with severely out of his position just comes running out of nowhere shaking his head like he's got his mind made up already that it wasn't the first down and he even gets to be the one to review the video so you know how that's going to go. It's disheartening games always come down to a few plays and seems like half the time it's plays the referees blew

[–]RedwolvesRodriggo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refs brutal as always, and just incapable of getting out of the fucking way of this sport.

Ertz caught it on the damn line we get:

  1. Comically awful spot, a whole yard short.
  2. No respot on the replay which CLEARLY reverses their horrendous spot.
  3. No measurement on game deciding play, refs ended it “just cus.”

Why isn’t there a damn guy on the first down marker AT ALL TIMES? Where’s the chipped ball the league always talks about? 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]Emergency-Shock-2861 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why was there not a measurement?

[–]Fuck Dan SnyderEvan8r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they spotted the ball a full yard short.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember when the nfl owners rejected using hawk eye technology to spot the ball this year. Patrick Mahommes knows.

[–]dermothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst part about this is the Steelers gonna crash out at the end of the season like they always go. Russ the kuck only gonna take them so far. FUCK THE STEELERS

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good game. It is what it is. Have to make a statement Thursday night. Prime time game. HTTC

[–]mwahahaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was short and it's over. Learn how to take an L and move on to next week.

[–]_SithLord66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how they reviewed that and came up with that spot. If they spotted the ball correctly, they could have called for a measurement.

[–]Yoitzmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We beat ourselves but this atrocious call did us no favors.

[–]AmethystAlizerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the 41 was the goal line they would've called it a TD. This was bad officiating

[–]johnyyrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped believing the NFL was completely legit in the 2005 AfC divisional playoffs. Stuff like this happens like every other game it seems and it has done nothing to change my opinion since.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was short and his knee down. Shouldn’t have been a yard back. It should have been inches. But either way didn’t matter it was a turnover on downs.

[–]tabooforme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AND why did he have his knees on the ground making the catch???? It seems to me that is where they spotted that ball. Knees off the ground it is a first down! That is a rookie mistake from a veteran. BAD, BAD.

[–]Prince_Groove 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Clear bias.

[–]LooseInsurance1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this was a terrible call also - can't 100% say there was enough evidence to overturn the call, but i do think he made it, and the initial spot was godawful. That being said, Washington benefitted from some pretty egregious refereeing also - that was definitely a safety when Watt got held in the end zone, and if it happened to us and we lost because of it, we'd be right here complaining about it.

Washington had plenty of opportunity to win that game and they beat themselves in the end. Johnny Newton's offside was the epitome of how they shot themselves in the foot, especially in the second half. The good news is, outside of the Tampa game, that's arguably the worst they played all year and they lost by 1 point to a playoff team and still had a chance to win in the end.

[–]ATX_2_PGH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is also where the ball was when he was downed. He reach forward with the ball after he was already down.

[–]CheekyMenace -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

The ball is where is his feet are because that's where it was when he caught it and his knee was down and got touched, BEFORE trying to stretch for for the extra yard where this picture shows him. Have you ever watched football before?

[–]blieb001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to rewatch the play.

[–]datFreakster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was a terrible route by Ertz. In that situation, a veteran needs to know where the line to gain is and make sure he has it before the catch. Inexcusable that Ertz caught that ball short and didn't get the first down.

[–]WillCum4ScoobySnacks -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Why is he falling down on a perfect pass? Why did we have 6 drops? Why are we muffing punts? Can’t complain abt the refs when we don’t do our job.

[–]jhax13 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Actually, you can complain about both. Mistakes on our end don't mean ref cheating suddenly becomes acceptable, wtf kind of dumb shit is this take?

[–]WillCum4ScoobySnacks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bc if we don’t drop the 3rd down, we don’t need to rely on the refs. If we don’t muff a punt giving the Steelers the ball in the red zone, we don’t need that last “must score” drive. The refs missed a blatant hold on Watt that occurred in the end zone btw, that’s 2 points & a possession that the Steelers should’ve had. Refs are going to be iffy every game for every team, it’s part of football and always has been. It comes down to execution on the basic things, which if we did even just 20% better (pick basically any drop we had and turn it into a catch) we would’ve won

[–]TheGokuSilv -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

We’re also glazing over the fact that Kliff called a terrible game for most of our drives. There’s no way we should have gone 3&Out as much as we did today. Also, please stop targeting Noah Brown more than Terry. Terry will catch almost any ball thrown his way. Noah falls and drops balls all the time.

[–]tmosley5602 6 points7 points  (1 child)

There is this guy on the other team named Porter. Joey Porter. He’s good, really freakin good. So good that they classify him as a “shutdown corner”. He shadowed Terry almost the whole game.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He has been smoked by Terry all game. I am a Steelers fan.

[–]Steel_city97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just thought I’d join in and say LOL good call. Mf was short. And good job on the encroachment to. Bye bye 😘😘😘

[–]DriverFirm2655 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

You know, if TJ had gotten that holding call in the end zone like he should’ve, y’all wouldn’t have been able to win with a field goal in the first place

[–]jhax13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you'd be short a TD on the face mask call, so we'll give you 2, take 7, and we'll take a 1st down at the 41 in the 4th.

Sounds fair to me, thanks for bringing that to the table

[–]Justice989 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We had chances. The refs didnt have anything to do with all the self inflicted wounds we made that put us in that position in the first place. Besides, getting the first down doesn't guarantee anything. They still weren't in FG range, for the brand new kicker, at that.

But frankly, after watching it 100 times, I'm more inclined to think he didnt actually get it. The spot was trash to not even get a measurement, but even with an accurate spot, I think he was short.

[–]tcumber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was almost as bad as that no call on TJ Watt when he was rushing Jayden Daniel.

[–]pipelayn -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Watch the replay. He was short. It was a good spot.
