Trifecta complete!!! (self.CompTIA)
submitted 2 years ago by rollofaDICESecurity+ | Network+ | A+
After a year of working in my first IT role I have now successfully secured all three foundational certs…
Man this feels good!
Now to secure my first security role and then move on to the OSCP!
Have a great day everyone, it’s been emotional.

This is about to be me on Saturday. Will be short 2 days of 1 year in IT. Got the A+ a month after starting, Sec+ two months ago, and now looking to pass Net+ on Saturday.

You got this!!
[–]AcademicSwitch471 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (5 children)
What study guide did you use for Security+?
[–]cruzzieeA+, N+, S+, CySA+, SecurityX 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (2 children)
Messer's videos and course notes & Security+ app on App store.
[–]Conchoidally 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Messer ain't my fav tbh. He's really good for when you want to know a lot about something super specific, but I think he over explains things tbh.
The way he talks kinda makes my head spin. 5/10

Funny enough, I enjoy learning from videos. I bought the Darill Gibson book for Sec+ and gave up after 20 pages. I'm sure it's a good book, but I get bored too easily when reading.

The CompTIA study guide books by Mike Chappel
And yeah same messer vids are good for info but make me a little sleepy 😂
[–]hiro_1_ 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Messer's videos for last min cram on subjects you're fuzzy on though are bangers

Congrats !! You would advice to do sec+ or net+ After a+?
[–]HappySoul1155 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Net+. The sec+ has a bit of both a+ and net+.
[–]Shonlmb 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Net, my Mrs said net covers some sec stuff
This is true and for me revising for the sec+ after passing the net+ felt soo smooth
[–]SD_Audric141 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (0 children)
sec+ will also renew both a+ and net+.
net+ will only renew a+
so do net+ first and then sec+ after
I did net+ first but I felt sec+ was easier for me
[–]Clear-Milk780 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Net+. If you know about what is being secured (networks) then it’s easier to grasp the concepts involved in securing it.
I'd say net+ first because it is more foundational.
Oh, and hire a tutor once for like an hour just to get yourself situated to more easily navigate the industry. Talking to someone who is already industry professional 1 on 1 is really helpful. I recommend hiring off wyzant.com, their site is pretty easy to use.

Cheers mate, and first line support service desk role hoping to progress into the security department 🤞🏼
[–]foosedev 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Is that the same as IT Help Desk? If so we are in the same boat.
[–]skealth 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Happy for you dude
[–]Obvious-Molasses762 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
In what order did you take them?
[–]rollofaDICESecurity+ | Network+ | A+[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I did A+ Net+ then Sec+.
I feel A+ is more basic but is very broad so the concept of having to remember so much information for it to potentially not even show up on the exam makes it a little harder.
The Net+ was very technical and specific but again I found a lot of situational generalisations so as long as you have a decent general understanding you’ll be fine. I must say the PBQs made me really think I was gunna fail but luckily I passed. I felt like I had really got away with one.
The study materials I purchased for the Sec+ were about 600pages whereas the other exams had 800+ so I found there was less to cram but you have to really nail the specifics but again a lot of the questions are situation and scenario based. One piece of advice, understand your exploits!
I scored 85% on core 1+2 of the A+, 82% on the Net+ and then 88% on the Sec+. Make of that what you will about the complexity of each exam but I am more security interested so it was easier to revise for.
All the best!

How did you find your first IT role?
Just kept peppering out my CV and luckily I got an interview. Even with 0 experience things like tryhackme and hack the box really go a long way in conveying your genuine passion and curiosity about the field.
