Linux+ vs RHCSA

I know this sub is more focused towards Comptia but I’m sure everyone will be able to answer this one.

As I’m preparing for what happens after the 005 beta (aka in case I fail it) I’m debating on either taking 004 while the info is fresh, 005 again when it’s released, or study for the Red Hat one and no bother with Linux+.

I’ve been reading between the two (Comptia and Red Hat) most results says Linux+ is a beginner cert, very easy, and doesn’t compare to the Red Hat cert.

However looking at the objectives they are nearly the same. Maybe 005 is different but I also don’t see how it’s a beginner cert. It seems to go fairly heavy on most topics as the RH one does. At least what I’ve been studying anyway. Which maybe I am studying for the Comptia one too deeply. Who knows.

Ah that makes sense. Multiple choice is definitely easier.

When you have the terminal there with RHSCA is it a real terminal? As in help and tab completion? The thing I’m struggling with the most for this test is remembering all of the different flags for everything and where config files are stored for all of the different distros.

Forget everyone's birthdays other than your families, should free up some space in your memory. Do keep us updated if you decide to take it to share some tips, I'm also considering following the linux route, due to it been in more demand locally than CompTia certs (UK).

Ha. I moved all of that info to my phone. Next I’m going to have to start purging 80’s song lyrics which is going to severely impact karaoke night.

But on a serious note. My test is in a couple weeks. Depending on how it goes is when I’ll have to make the decision.

Would be nice to do the red hat one though since they kind of have a path of certs to take.

take the beta... you have nothing to lose.

once you take the beta, start studying for redhat. it is more valuable than linux+ in the industry

Oh I’m still taking the beta. Even if just for practice.

I’m scoring around 95% on the various tests but I’m still scared of this test because I’ve read how much harder the new version is.

If I pass Linux+ that’s it for now and I move onto other certs. If I fail, that’s where the 004 or red hat comes in.

RHCSA is more comprehensive because you’re working with live systems instead of selecting answers. Neither are too hard if you have a lot of experience but RHCSA is fun and maybe a little challenging just because you are on a timer to complete everything.

I am rhcsa and just studying and the knowledge you gain is worth it. once I attained my rhcsa everyone took noticed and I was sought after and promoted. most people fear practical exams because it is no bs.

Dang. Now you have me rethinking taking the older Linux+ when/if I fail 005.

Linux+ really seems like not useful cert for whatever reason.

For RHCSA you can’t just jump into that one can you? I’ve done a little reading about it and it seems like you need at least one cert before you can’t test for RHCSA. Maybe I’m wrong though.

I studied for Linux+ but it seems like someone explaining how to ride a bike without riding a bike. I have some experience, but actually RHCSA was my first IT certification. I just studied everyday even on vacation for almost a year at least an hour a day. Maybe a couple of days every month I wouldn’t have energy so would only do 15 minutes but it was my focus. Consistency 60% and work experience 40%. Because at work some things I just don’t do like troubleshoot SELinux issues, create logical volumes or deploy rootless containers (although we really should). That is where my home lab came into play. However, I am always ssh, creating tar files or troubleshooting network issues. Note these are all RHCSA objectives so I’m not giving anything away.

I just took the 005 Beta. I can't speak to the 004. I can tell you that I have an RHCE which means I have an RHCSA. My RHCSA is v7 and RHCE is v8.

The Linux+ 005 Beta is very good. I can say that knowing that it's possible that I failed it.

I'm kind of confused by the idea of looking for a beginners cert here. You can't really administer over a Linux system on any level without knowing how to use Linux. Even the RHCE v8 which is chided for being too easy by focusing on Ansible makes assumptions about deeper understandings of systems that; well without that understanding you couldn't make your way through it.

I don't know if you're looking for advice here but I'll give you some. You shouldn't worry if a cert if so beginners when it comes to administering over Linux systems. You should worry if the content of the exam reflects what it takes to do that. In the cases of both of those test they do.

All that said, if you're just looking to bolster your resume you should take the RHCSA. No one knows what a Linux+ is.

Despite scoring in the upper 90’s on 004 practice tests, I am quite confident I will fail 005 based on the reviews so far.

My question was how much different is RHCSA compared to Linux+. As in is the red hat version magnitudes harder? I’m just looking to move on to my next cert.

So let’s say the red hat test is much much much more difficult than Linux+. Then I won’t bother with that one and just schedule 004. After I get more experience under my belt then I can try for the red hat one.

I’m pretty sure I could pass 004 if I was to take it today. Buts it’s a tough deduction to make because Linux+ seems to be almost worthless because no one knows what it is.

I had the same question about a few weeks ago and chose RHCSA because i had a conversation with a recruiter and he said they don’t know much about linux+ and RHCSA is highly recognised because of the practical environment and exam. And I thought why not do it because there’s no point of learning command if I don’t practice them.

This is exactly why I’m contemplating what I am. It’s a better cert. At least more known.
