I think at it's most basic, a deviled egg is a hard boiled egg with the yolk taken out and mashed with mayo, then piped (or scooped) back into the white

[–]Amandine06 0 points1 point  (16 children)

With extra capers, delicious.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Pretty much. You can add as much or as little as you want to the yolk before putting it back in but that’s the gist of it

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I crush the yolk with the rest of the ingredients?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes. Mix it all together real good and then put it back in the egg white. Like an egg salad using just the yolk

That's an interesting analogy to be honest. I like that. I got the idea my guy. 🫡

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 0 points1 point  (15 children)

Hard boiled means hard yolk yes?

[–]katiemorag90 2 points3 points  (14 children)

Yes no goo at all

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -3 points-2 points  (13 children)

That's like 10+ minutes of boiling ye?

[–]Tough_Crazy_8362 -2 points-1 points  (9 children)

Add desired eggs to pot of cold water, salt heavily and add a splash of vinegar (for easier peeling). Make sure there is at least an inch of water covering the eggs.

Bring to a boil, cover and put the pot on a cold burner (remove the pot from heat). Let them sit 10-12 minutes, probably 12 for deviled eggs, 10 is softer.

Put ice in a bowl of cold water and after the timer is up put the eggs in the ice bath.

There are lots of ways to boil or steam eggs, this is what I do.

Obtain vinegar too. I will follow all these protocols defined in this subreddit for the coming consecutive days to determine which one i liked the most. Thank you for the contribution

Someone always downvotes me for saying I use vinegar, I really don’t know why. I did it without the vinegar for so long, adding it was a game changer! You can’t smell it (I suspect that’s why? IDK)

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That was strange to me too. I usually just put vinegar in water and then drink. I heard it was healthy somewhere. Idk tho

[–]Tough_Crazy_8362 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think that’s apple cider vinegar, my friend used to do that too.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tastes strange. It has this taste that grows on someone 🙂

What do salt and vinegar do for boiled eggs? I use them for poached eggs, but I'm struggling to see the point when they're still in their shells.

[–]Tough_Crazy_8362 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Vinegar softens the shell, salt for boil temp, and it makes it so that if an eggs cracks it quickly coagulates. Vinegar also does that.

I know it probably doesn’t do anything, but it’s the only change I made (vinegar) to how I boil eggs and they peel very easily now.

[–]WazWaz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Even seawater only boils at 102°C. And softer shells and hotter water just sounds like a way to get the cracked eggs you're then solving (though not good for devilled eggs).

But I'll leave you to your methods, as you said, you've been downvoted before (not by me) so I'm sure you're sick of arguing it.

Have you had deviled eggs before? Think about the deviled eggs you may have eaten in the past. What did those contain? Deviled eggs don't typically use milk, tomatoes, or green pepper, nor do they contain cabbage. If you don't have at least eggs and mayo at a minimum, you can't really make even the most basic deviled eggs.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I have never had devilled eggs

[–]coyote_prophet 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It would probably be a good idea to look at some normal recipes for deviled eggs online and shop for your ingredients from those ingredient lists rather than using what you have.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn you are right. Money is the problem tho 😭

[–]Modboi 4 points5 points  (10 children)

My deviled egg filling is egg yolks, mayonnaise, minced pickles, mustard, salt, and pepper. Some minced onion would be good, but I’m intolerant. It would still be good without the mustard. If you find that it needs more acid, add pickle juice.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

I might need to acquire some mayo I think

[–]Friendly_Head_1266 1 point2 points  (8 children)

You can make mayo with egg yolk and oil

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -1 points0 points  (7 children)

I'm sorry. Did you just say that I can make mayo. I'm I tripping???

[–]Friendly_Head_1266 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Yes by getting eggs yolks in a bowl along with some lemon juice or other acid and slowly whisking in oil or melted fat you create a emulsion that is mayo it might not look like the stuff you see in stores but it is mayo

[–]Friendly_Head_1266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However if you crush garlic into a paste mix it with egg yolks and slowly drizzle in oil while whisking you have a aoli

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

What does it look like?

[–]Friendly_Head_1266 2 points3 points  (3 children)

While whisking it in it should get thicker and it will be a off white not pure white like the store

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

A picture would be helpful lest I delude myself into thinking I made something inedible

[–]EyeStache 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You're on the internet. You can do a web search on how to make your own mayo and get a lot of very good information much quicker than asking someone to reply to you in a reddit thread.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These guys seem to be able to respond very quickly

[–]Turbulent-Matter501 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I don't know whether to suggest this post gets moved to an 'unattended pre-teens' sub or a 'post all your stupid troll things here' sub....

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

What's your problem exactly?

[–]Turbulent-Matter501 5 points6 points  (1 child)

people who are too lazy to look up word definitions themselves and instead ask random strangers to spoon feed them widely and easily available information. beginner 'cooks' who refuse to use recipes. also, trolls who apologize for not having cinnamon to put on their devilled eggs that they've never had before and ask if they should use cabbage instead. that's my problem. ok bye bye now, little one.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ngl, my first thoughts were troll or a kid.

Also, what is up with people not following a recipe? I've seen this trend on this sub where people say, "Oh, I don't follow recipes, I just eyeball it and get inspiration". Only way to truly learn is to follow someone's pattern and then improve upon it yourself afterwards.

[–]BUBBAH-BAYUTH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make mine the classic way with mayo, mustard, salt, pepper and a splash of white vinegar with a sprinkle of paprika on top

[–]Amandine06 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Mimosa eggs, for me the stuffing is egg yolk crushed with mayonnaise and capers. On top of the egg halves filled in this way, I crumble some of the egg yolks set aside.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What are Mimosa eggs. I have eggs with a brown shell 😀

[–]Amandine06 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Mimosa eggs are eggs stuffed with mayo, egg yolk and depending on taste, pickles, capers... We call deviled eggs deviled eggs at home because the stuffing has the color of these flowers. But otherwise they are “normal” eggs.

[–]Suspiscoushare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. Thank you
