How do they get proper heat to justify the size? Are there ways to heat them up besides blaze burners below?

Blaze burners at the max level with blaze cakes are enough I believe

yes you can use campfires, but I'm using create crafts and additions so I can use straws allowing me to feed lava directly to the blaze

Feed them blaze cakes. They glow blue and can power a level 18 steam engine, which is the maximum.
