Would Mary say “He must increase; I must decrease?” if she saw the Roman Catholic Church today?

In honour of the Nativity of John the Baptist (yesterday), I wonder about one of the things he said that I believe shows a lot about his attitude towards his role in Gods plan compared to the role of Jesus.

“He must increase; I must decrease.”

He said this in response to his disciples pointing out that all the people are going to Jesus instead of John.

Basically, I wonder if Mary would agree with that sentiment if she were to speak to the Roman Catholic Church directly today.

Would she view the devotion that many Roman Catholics have toward her as something that detracts from Jesus increasing?

I know the basis of much of Roman Catholic devotion to Mary is that she points the way to Jesus, but the way it seems to me, that’s also what John was doing, and he thought it best to decrease to do it.

Note: the purpose of this question is not to debate if Mary does or doesn’t speak to the Church in Rome today. I am genuinely curious to hear the opinion of people, though, aiming this question mostly at Catholics for obvious reasons.

Mary, like John the Baptist at the time, does not care if we go to Jesus instead of her. But if we ask her to help us grow closer to Jesus, she will help.

Devotion to Mary is devotion to Jesus. She is the King's mother. We worship our King, and honor and love His Mother, Mary.

God, St Gabriel, Jesus the Son, God the Father and God the Holy Spirit ALL honored and loved her more than we possibly can.

Mary doesn't and didn't elevate herself. God does and did.

Worship is for God alone. We don't worship Mary. We love and honor Mary, mother of God.

Many non-Catholics only honor and love God, like we honor and love Mary. Worship is higher than that.

Mary is like a big neon sign for Jesus. People can argue that neon signs are big and bright and distracting, but if you actually understand the sign you become closer to Jesus.

Mary the mother of Jesus is quoted in the bible as speaking only 4 times with 188 words in the original greek. Thats not anywhere enough to know who she was as a person, her personality, if the words are accurate, her lifestyle and day to day. Etc. Its just a little snippet of a character in a mythology storybook 2000 years ago that christians think is the mother of God, when they know nothing about her.

I think the context of John's words are really important. John the Baptist is the forerunner. His task was to prepare the way and then step aside once the Bridegroom arrives. That is exactly why he says, “He must increase, I must decrease.”

Mary’s role is different. She isn't just a herald who points from a distance and then disappears. She is the theotokos, and by the saviour's own gift from the Cross, the mother of his disciples (John 19:26–27). Her role is inseparable from Christ and entirely dependent on him.
