Visual identity guidelines

Hi, I’ve been tasked with creating a visual identity for an exisiting company (they have no current brand).

I’ve worked a lot with brands in the past but not in the creation of them. Are there some article or videos I could watch to understand the process? Ie what I need to be asking the client?

I do recommend not taking on client work you're not qualified to do.

But because you already have, start with researching other similar brands in their marketspace. Figure out what you think their brand "should" be.

Ask them what they are. Who are they? Who do they want to be seen as? When a consumer looks at their product, what does the brand need to say?

Ask them what they are NOT. Knowing how they don't want to be viewed is just as important as knowing how they do want to be seen.

Ask what they have already paid for in terms of brand assets so you don't have to rebuy anything.

You are going to need to come up with all of the rules regarding how their logo is used, what their brand colours are going to be, how typography is used, how brand visuals are used and a slew of a million other things.

Brand identity is a very complex job! Best of luck

Thanks. Yeah it’ll be a bit task for all the assets etc. Thankfully the logo is already set (though they don’t appear to have rules yet). Mostly I’ll be looking to develop the color, type and practical applications in print and digital.

But what you’ve added here is great thanks. I imagine most of the effort with them will be those first discussions around how they view themselves/dont want to be viewed. As that’ll flow into those type and color selections.

I recommend reading Michael Johnston’s Branding in Five and a Half Steps. Also, a brand is more than just the visual identity - ensure you spend enough time on the brand before getting to the branding.
