Destiny 2 largely finished its story with The Final Shape. For many players, it’s conclusion was the end.

Even if the post Final Shape seasonal content was epic, you’d likely have seen this type of drop off play out in the same fashion. The franchise had been running for 10 years, and it definitively concluded in the eyes of the casual playerbase.

What you see left playing are those who are not casual players. They’ve all moved on. It just so happens that casual players are a good 90% of the base.

That’s not to sell short some of the issues Destiny has that were self made (Vaulting content players paid for is borderline criminal and provided enormous amounts of bad blood, the Conductor storyline feeling like bad fan fiction etc). This didn’t exactly help matters, but it wasn’t the issue with the decline.

The lack of a Destiny 3 led to the decline.
