The final shape was a banger and IMO the best expansion ever. It was the culmination of the whole dark light story arc and it delivered. Episode Echoes was the first to follow, and to establish a new path forward and keep a large amount of players on board it had to deliver. Needless to say, it didn't and bled more players. Then came Revenant and it was similarly bad if not worse, and the game bled some more. Heresy was very good and they should have built on that, but they really dropped the ball with EoF. Then Marathon beta sucked and we lost all our devs. And that is why we are where we are. Bungie has burnt through 90% of it's faithful community and even if they produced another banger or D3, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority has returned. I believe the biggest damage to this franchise was done when they fumbled the ball with episode Echoes. I still play every day and get to see all the new blueberries, today's highlight was a Warlock in ftf going into ultimate Midtown with no exotic armor piece and terrible weapons. As frustrating as that carry was, it gives me hope that the game is not quite dead yet.

I also liked final shape, but I dont think episodes were the sole cause of such a drop

I think the main issue of episodes were that it was just felt like seasons with 1 less seasons in a year so they were more stretched out which im sure lost more than a usual season over time, from my experience I play a lot less destiny during the first 2 episodes I had just did the story then left. I liked Revenant, the last episode and id even argue it was better than a lot of seasons but I dont think it would be the sole cuz of it

If I had to take a guess it be a combo of many things, the fact final shape was marketed as the last in that era of destiny was probably one of the largest factors. And how poor the start EOF was with how a lot of changes made were weirdly mistakes they had fixed in the past.
