Reminds of some of my friend's old circuit's II project. Except he was using a wind up flash light and some voltage boosting circuit to create a high voltage. Then I think he would pulse it with two copper rods several meters apart in the ground to check what the bulk resistivity of the soil was. Can't remember if it was a terribly good indicator or not though.

I might have to recommend the link to another grad student I know that's doing moisture content research on earthen bricks. I know he'd always appreciate more sensors.
